JUNIOR ILKLEY HARRIERS
Spring is always our busiest time of year with the Junior Ilkley Moor Fell Races and the conclusion of the Wharfedale Primary Schools and Peco XC Leagues, Sportshall Athletics and Presentation of Awards evenings writes Shirley Wood.
Ilkley Moor Junior Fell races There was a slight course change at the start for the ninth Junior fell races but the course lengths were the same as previous years and the four new records all stand. In the one mile race Holmfirth Harrier Lewis Byram lowered the U14 record by 13 secs and his twin sisters Lucy and Erica were not only joint first in the U12 race but also claimed a course record by 27 secs. Ilkley Harrier Bethan Morley improved the U10 record by 20 secs and in the two mile event Annabel Mason of Wakefield beat her own record by a staggering 90 seconds. This event is also the annual Junior Ilkley Harrier Fell championship where Phil Dean Trophies are presented to the first boy and girl JIH from U10 to U16. The 2010 winners were: U10, Dominic Coy and Bethan Morley; U12, Jacob Hellewell and Sarah Pickering; U14, Thomas Kerr and Lucy Williamson; U16, Edward Muirhead

and Georgia Malir. Congratulations to all, to everyone who competed at the event and to the many helpers and marshals who gave up their time to make it happen.
Wharfedale Primary Schools’ Cross-Country League
This is the fifth season that Ilkley Harriers have organised the Primary Schools’ Cross- Country League competition. Eleven local primary schools competed in five races organised by Ghyll Royd, Westville House, Ben Rhydding, Ashlands and All Saints Schools. Although there are races for Year 1 to Year 6 at each event only the results from Years 3 to 6 are used for the eight League competitions. The League is going from strength to strength with between 400 and 500 children regularly competing. The racing at the sharp end is truly inspirational to watch and the support given to those further back in the field by their fellow team members, parents and teachers is unbelievable.
There were some really close finishes
