Samantha Migneault Named to MENC 2011 All-National Honor Choir

Samantha Migneault

MENC, the National Association for Music Education, announced the members of the 2011 All-National Honor Ensembles. The ensembles feature outstanding 10th, 11th, and 12th grade student musicians that were selected through a vigorous audition screening process. This will result in an event that will feature a National Honor 180-person Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra, and a 150-person Mixed Choir. Hudson resident Samantha Migneault, a sophomore at Alvirne High School, was named

to the MENC 2011 All-National Honor Mixed Choir performing as Soprano 2.

MENC established its National Honor Ensembles as the ultimate recognition of music student performance beyond the state and divisional levels, spotlighting the accomplishments of superior student musicians from around the nation. The selected choral students will rehearse for three days under the direction of

nationally acclaimed conductor Elena Sharkova and will perform along with the other ensemble groups on June 26 in Washington, DC, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Migneault is a 15-year-old student at Alvirne High School, where she is enrolled in honor classes, the Select Choir (the B-Naturals), and is a member of the French Honor Society. She also studies voice and piano under the direction of Carlos Martinez. Samantha is very active in community theatre and will be appearing in the Peacock Players production of Seussical the Musical in May at Nashua’s Court Street Theatre and then in the Palace Teen Company production of Godspell at Manchester’s historical Palace Theatre in June. “As talented as she is, Samantha still exceeds expectations,

striving to improve herself as a quality musician and artist. Her work ethic is evident, as she has earned among the highest scores in auditions for the NH Jazz All-State Festival, as well as the top score for Altos in the NHMEA All-State auditions. Samantha was also selected for the All NE Festival this year,” said Elizabeth Beaton, Choral Director at Alvirne High School. “We are very pleased to offer this unique performance opportunity to a very select group of our nation’s finest high school musicians,” said David Weatherred, MENC Northwest Division past president and chair of the All-National Honor Ensembles. “Over the course of four days, these top flight musicians will rehearse with marvelous and inspirational conductors, leading up to an exceptional finale performance on June 26. The 2011 MENC All-National Honor Ensembles will most surely be a once in a lifetime musical experience for these incredible high school musicians!”

In-School Suspensions - continued from page 5

As a result, school leaders and administrators developed a plan for students who would have normally been suspended from school grounds are now “invited to participate in” the In-School Suspension program. Teachers of the suspended student send the required class

work to be done to the in-suspension classroom teacher, and the student will be required to do his class work while performing his suspension.

“What is great about this program is that students can

receive help from a certified teacher while doing their studies,” commented Hudson Memorial School Principal Sue Nadeau. “In the past, kids who were suspended could have received a zero for work not being done, but now, while on in-school suspension, kids can receive immediate help.” The Hudson School District provides handbooks to the students

who enter into the halls of their school years. These handbooks list the types of offenses and the length of time an in-school suspension will last. In-school suspensions may last anywhere from one day to the maximum of five days.

Every Friday, each Hudson school has developed a “student support team” made up of Guidance counselors, administrators, an in-school suspension teacher, and paraprofessionals who evaluate and discuss those students who have been involved with the in- school suspension program. As they discuss each child, decisions are made as to how they may support the student better, and assist the student with any behavioral or learning concerns. While students who receive in-school suspension are isolated from the general student population, they are not isolated from their teachers or, more specifically, the learning process. “They get their work done and they do not fall behind the work required and are able to keep up,” continued Nadeau. “We want to keep kids in our schools and we want them to continue to learn, develop, feel good about themselves, and grow. The in-school suspension program has offered us the opportunity to do what we do—teach. Our teachers are to be commended for really connecting with the kids. They make the difference.”
