Swimmers Wrap Up Season Successfully
T
he MAC competitive swim team finished the short-course season with impressive results. Eetu Karvonen, Carson Brindle and Tristian Furnary each won individual events at sectionals. Karvonen set meet records in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and Brindle posted the ninth fastest 50 freestyle by a 16-year-old in U.S. history with a 20.25 at senior sectionals.
Karvonen also swam in the Sweden Stockholm Grand Prix two weeks after sectionals and improved his lifetime best time by four seconds. He won the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:14.42, which is two seconds off a hard Olympic qualifying time.
Furnary set personal bests in his 50, 100
and 200 freestyles, while winning the 50 freestyle with a 23.16. He also placed second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 back- stroke, 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle at age group sectionals. Both sectional meets were held a week apart in Federal Way, Wash. While these three won individual cham-
pionships, others on the competitive team swam strong at senior sectionals, age group sectionals and the Oregon state champion- ships. A major highlight was Andre DeNegri,
Kyle Dalrymple, Max Bley-Male and Carson Brindle setting the 15-16 national age group record in the 200 medley relay with a 1:34.83. The boys were a second off breaking the 15-16 national age group record in the 400 medley relay as well. Another standout at age group sectionals
was Van Mathias. The 10-year-old placed second in the 50 fly with a 30.77. Mathias also placed eighth in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 100 fly. Jackson Locke Harris placed second in the 200 fly, going 2:04.55. He also placed sixth in the 200 IM and 100 fly. One unbelievable end to the season was
Garen Marter’s performance at state and sectionals. Marter broke his wrist three weeks before state and decided to compete even with a cast on his left arm. Starting in the water, Marter made finals and placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke. He was well off his best time, but all things consid- ered it was a great moment. At age group sectionals, Marter placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.58 and 12th in the 400 IM with a time of 4:43.03.
