ATHLETICS
The Exercise and Conditioning Committee was named the 2010 sport committee of the year. The committee’s goal is to ensure that MAC stays current and relevant with fitness trends, and continues to be considered an outstanding athletic club.
E&C Recognized for Dedication to Fitness
T
he Exercise and Conditioning Committee, chaired by Todd Husband, has been selected as the 2010 sport committee of the year. Committee members include Connie Dunkle- Weyrauch, Mike Falkenstein, Randy Goldsmith, Cheryl Hammond, Cameron Hyde, Lorrie McAlpine, Nick Munly, Alan Newman, Malin Petrusich, Gail Post, Jeff Sachtler, Tom Stevenson, Marianne Sweeney, Jay Ternberg, M. Todd Singh, and member Coach Dr. Nels Carlson. According to Diana Callaway, Athletic Committee member and liaison to the Exercise and Conditioning Committee, “This is a large committee with a variety of personalities, professions and styles, but everyone participates wholeheart- edly, brainstorming, listening and working together in lively discussions to present the best possible workout space and events for our membership.”
The E&C Committee is responsible for equipment and programs in the Exercise and Conditioning Room, the Small Weight Room, Studio IV and the Stretching Room. According to the recent club survey, these areas see the largest usage in the club by the highest percentage of members.
The E&C Committee sponsors three events during the year: the Bench Press Contest, the Fall Fitness Challenge and the Winter Blitz Fit. In addition, Carlson

and Newman, both give lectures on prevention, maintenance, and aging issues, generally timed around the three major events. The doctors are also working to develop ways to promote awareness to all MAC members that “fitness for life” requires a plan of exercise.
The E&C Committee works in part-
nership with MAC staff to maximize the availability of state-of-the-art exercise equipment for the membership. Up-to-date cardio machines with minimal downtime is an emphasis, as is providing the full gamut of resistance and balance training equipment. The goal of the committee is to ensure that MAC stays current and relevant with fitness trends, and continues to be considered by many as one of the most outstanding athletic clubs in the U.S.
In addition to the highly trained and exceptional “red shirt” staff at MAC, every E&C Committee member has a blue shirt that identifies him or her as a committee member and someone available to members for comments and help. So the next time members are in the E&C Room and feeling a little intimidated or lacking a little knowledge about a particular piece of equipment, they can just ask a “red shirt” staff person or a “blue shirt” committee member for their advice. And if the red- or blue-clad shirt person is not an employee or committee member, that’s okay, a new friendship just might begin. WM
