Washington Park: Rose Garden

In 1915, Jesse A. Currey, rose hobbyist and Sunday editor of the Oregon Journal,

convinced city offi cials to institute a rose test garden to serve as a safe haven during World War I for hybrid roses grown in Europe. Rose lovers feared that these unique plants would be destroyed in the bombings. The Park Bureau approved the idea in 1917; by early 1918, hybridists from England began to send roses to Portland.

Members are invited to take a trolley ride up to Washington Park for a tour of the historic International Rose Test Garden Tuesday, June 14. The group meets in the Turnaround for this special outing at 10:30 a.m. Tour guides take attendees on an exceptional 45-minute walk of the beautiful rose garden. Following the tour, everyone enjoys a delicious individually packaged lunch in the park, provided by the club. In the case of inclement weather, lunch is served at the club. The event ends at approximately 1 p.m. Wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothes. The cost is $36 per person.
