EUROPEAN UPDATE Riddle of the best-selling Sphinx
Lottomatica is market leader in both the Italian Comma 6a and VLT sectors with Sphinx
A dominant stand position at the Rimini ENADA Spring exhibition reflects the size and scale of Lottomatica's business in the Italian gaming sector. One of the largest concessionaires with its VLT and AWP products installed in the market as part of the first wave of VLT deployments, Lottomatica is reaping the rewards of first- mover advantage and has built upon this with further innovations drawn from its enormous library of games from its in- house game development houses, SPIELO and ATRONIC.
At the very centre of the exhibition stand was the new Marim cabinet, a new platform for Lottomatica's push into the Comma 6a market in Italy. The Comma 6a market is now back on the agenda, with rival manufacturers following Lottomatica's spectacular success with Sphinx. A game changer in the sense that while all eyes had focused on the VLT sector, Lottomatica and ATRONIC had begun work on converting its casino back catalogue game, Sphinx, into both Comma 6b and 6a titles. There were companies at the show kicking themselves for having taken the VLT-only path rather than opt for a split or Comma 6a-only route (especially those waiting in the second phase of VLT homologation).
Sphinx is the No.1 game in both the VLT and Comma 6a markets in Italy, and what's significant is that while one of these is the future of the street sector, the here and now in terms of volume is the AWP market, which has over 400,000 machines on site. "The big worry had been that VLTs would cannibalise the Comma 6a sector," stated Lottomatica's Walter Bugno in Rimini. "It would appear that's not the case. Instead, we are seeing new opportunities for AWPs as players respond to the introduction of VLTs with a positive uplift for Comma 6a developing at the same time. The fact that the payouts are very different has meant that the two products compete in a very different way. Cannibalisation is very low - if any."
Most venues to date have a single supplier, with none currently operating with two supplier systems in the same venue. It's a position that's benefited the first wave suppliers, though everyone is waiting for a cross-ticketing solution to open up the marketplace to multi-system operation. "Everyone is looking and waiting for answers," stated Mr. Bugno.

"However, Lottomatica is more balanced about the results, which have been very strong from the outset. We have had a great set of results and haven't heard of any supplier talking about VLTs not exceeding their expectations. When the market is fully developed, with all venues able to offer multiple games from multiple system, then we will have a clear picture of the marketplace. Right now we are focused on launching a new Comma 6a cabinet into this extremely large market. Our view is to play in both segments, adapting games for the market and building on our success with Sphinx in both the VLT and in the street sectors. Our ability to choose from the ATRONIC and SPIELO libraries is as massive advantage in this market right now."
Astro Corp balances VLT and Comma 6a delivery
Astro Corp exhibited its range of VLT and Comma 6a gaming titles on its distributor's, Crystaltec, stand at the Rimini ENADA Spring exhibition in Italy. While international focus on the Italian market centres around the implementation of video lottery terminals in the market, Astro Corp continues to find great success with its games for the much larger and still hugely profitable Comma 6a sector.
Recently released games available from Crystaltec and Astro Corp. include Caveman Gold, Golden Rainbow and Halloween Party Gold; all Comma 6a titles and some of the best performing in the
Italian market right now. Figures show that while the initial introduction of VLTs in Italy hurt the performance of Comma 6a machines, the figures have stabilised and in many locations are out- performing previous levels.

Die Regierung strebt die schrittweise Einführung eines Spielgesetzes an, das mit von anderen Spielaktivitäten isolierten Kasinospielen beginnen würde.
Pläne für einen neuen Kasino- und Freizeitkomplex am National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in der Nähe der englischen Stadt Birmingham würden nach Meinung von Erschließern die Schaffung von mehr als 1000 Arbeitsplätzen bedeuten. Der Standort hat sich mit Genting Casinos zusammengetan und eine Baugenehmigung beim Solihull Council beantragt.
