SOUTH WALES SECRETS #10: Llanthony Priory
Welsh writer Owen Sheers recounts some of his favourite walks in South Wales.
Although currently living and working in London, Owen Sheers often returns to Abergavenny to visit family and friends. His love of his boyhood home and its beautiful surrounding countryside is apparent in much of his writing. His 2008 novel, Resistance – which is currently due for release as a full-length film this autumn – is based in the Olchon Valley and deals with the impact of war on a sleepy Welsh community. His popular second collection of poetry, Skirrid Hill, also takes its initial inspiration from the Welsh countryside. And as he explained to Buzz when we recently caught up with him, The Black Mountains and the surround- ing Welsh countryside remain an important part of his life:

back from New York I was torn between Wales and coming to London and because of the work I was doing at the time, London seemed to make sense for a bit. I’m very fortunate that my parents are still in the same house that I was brought up in just outside Abergavenny and I’m back a lot actu- ally,” explains Sheers.
“I always love going back to the Black Mountains and the Llanthony Valley. There’s a walk that I do love doing which starts at Llanthony priory. It goes up to the ridge which you walk along and then you come down. It’s one of those grounding walks that I love doing.”
“I called my second collection Skirrid Hills. I used to always run to the top of the Skirrid. I now increasingly walk up it! It’s been a while since I ran up in one go. I keep telling myself I’ll get back
