LIKE any other art form, music is continually evolving and although that evolution for the most part trundles along so slowly as to be hardly noticed, there are occasions when someone comes along and gives the process a much-needed kick. In recent years that’s been particularly true in the world of folk and traditional music which spent many years wallowing in the doldrums of conformity and (with few notable exceptions) lacked any sense of imagination and adventure. British folk music almost became a parody of itself and it’s only the arrival of a new generation of musicians on the scene over the past decade or two, which has shaken it from the complacency that threatened to stifle it into extinction, and among the most startling of those new arrivals is the extraordinarily talented and inventive Jim Moray. Since bursting onto the scene in 2003 with his debut album Sweet England, Jim’s reimagining of English traditional songs blended with orchestral flourishes, guitars and electronics has divided opinion between the progressive thinkers who consider him a breath of fresh air and the dyed- in-the-wool traditionalists who don’t believe that the tradition should be tampered with. That first album was originally recorded as Jim’s final year project of his music degree at the Birmingham Conservatoire, and its release marked the arrival of a singular talent on the scene. It also won him several awards including both Best Newcomer and Folk Album Of The Year at the prestigious 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and his growing reputation as a live performer found him playing the main stage at Cambridge Folk Festival, Sidmouth Folk Festival and WOMAD as well as touring internationally. Since that startling debut Jim has released three more well received albums; the eponymous Jim Moray (2006), Low Culture (2008) and most recently In Modern History (2010) which in typical unconventional fashion he gave away free with Songlines music magazine. A multi instrumentalist, arranger and producer, Jim Moray has made the transition from folk outsider to one of the scene’s most respected musicians and performers. Although he regularly tours with his band, Jim is equally at home in a solo setting and it’s in this guise that he’ll be at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall on Tues 10 May as part of the ongoing Roots Unearthed series.
