CHRISTOPHER REES

Fri 13, Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff Tickets: £7. Info: 09 2030 4400 / www.chapter.org /

www.christopherrees.com The sign of a great artist is one who can reach the marker of a fifth album and consistently reel out music of a cutting edge quality. Welsh singer-songwriter Christopher Rees is no exception, and his first headline date in Cardiff this year heralds music that boasts classic vintage energy. Chapter Arts Centre will host the launch of the Cardiff resident’s fifth album; joined by his full band and horn section, prepare yourself for what ought to be a memorable performance showcasing the fresh sound he’s developed for brand new album, Heart On Fire (see p. 44 for a review). The South Austin Horns are the prominent addition to Rees’ new material. Three weeks were spent in Texas with the Horns where they embellished the Welshman’s work, achieving the dimension which he had envisioned for his music. His love of vintage Stax recordings is also evident throughout; while the music is arguably more polished than his earlier work, it maintains the raw and soulful aesthetic of the Memphis label. This new sound is indeed a change of direction for Rees, and as such a performance packed with folkish grace and Southern swagger is expected. Support comes from John Lewis, a long-running staple of the Welsh rockabilly scene.
