Marathon Mike is running for charity!

The very first issue of Neon Magazine was dedicated to cancer victim Anne Hardley. Last October, her husband Mike bravely wrote for Neon, explaining how difficult life had become since losing her. Two years on and sitting in the middle of his beautiful garden, Mike, who appears bolder and happier explains to me how Anne’s passing has lead him to think of others in a big way.

just that! Anyone who knows Mike will understand how having all his hair shaved off was an extremely big deal!

, he did

So far, Mike’s charity has raised £1,535 (including gift aid) and he is extremely confident that he will break the £2k barrier.

He isn’t just stopping there though. Mike says that next year will be one full of ‘mini marathons’, which will be part of his training to climb Mt Kilimanjaro in 2013! He also talks about running the London Marathon after the climb, then possibly cycling across India and even running the Great Wall of China! All proceeds Mike receives are for Cancer Research UK and he is keen to get across the message to everyone how important it is for us all to donate to Cancer Research as this evil disease WILL sadly affect one in three of us in our lifetime, if not directly then, to someone close to us.

Anne was a friend to many, and after her death in March 2009 Mike admits that he spent far too much time consumed with understandable grief. However, in mid-February 2011 he decided to set up a “Just Giving” donation page, pledging that in April, he would have his head shaved, with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK! On April 5th

As far as Mike’s well-being goes, he claims to be a lot more positive and happier than when he last spoke to Neon, explaining the charity work has made him think more of other people. He says his two sons Emile and Chris are still coping extremely well - Emile has in fact settled into his own house and is doing brilliantly in work and Chris is doing exceptionally well in school. Mike says that Chris has a fantastic group of friends who need a lot of praise because they helped his son through the hard times.

Mike intends to pack in his I.T. business once Chris leaves for university and will take up photography instead as a full time career (currently a hobby that Neon will be helping him with in the future)!

Mike’s charity work is quite amazing, and it wouldn’t have been at all possible without Anne’s inspiration, who shines even in her death. So as Mike says - let’s all Help me… Help you… Help them!

If you would like to donate to Mike’s ‘Just Giving’ page then you have up until the end of May to do so.
