A National First for Wareham and Swanage Air Cadets! 2
185 Squadron of the Air Training Corps has two thriving bases, Wareham and Swanage, with over 50 Cadets aged between 13 and 20, girls and boys. You may have seen them around our towns
assisting at community events or collecting for the RBL Remembrance Day Poppy Appeal. They are easily recognised by their immaculate Air Force Blue uniforms.
The Air Training Corps is a national youth organisation with more cadets than the whole of the adult Royal Air Force! It offers a variety of interests, from a love of aviation, adventure training and sport, through personal self-awareness, confidence building and community service.
“A National First?” Any organisation that provides so many activities must ensure that they are supported by a thorough assessment of any risk; surely cadets will pay even more attention to keeping themselves safe wherever they are, at school, at work or in their leisure time if they shared in the process.
Headquarters Air Cadets at RAF Cranwell devised a plan under the leadership of Mr Donald Gordon who is Chief Environment & Safety Officer for the Air Cadet Organisation; and at the recent Annual Awards ceremony for the squadron, presented successful cadets with a British Safety Council Award in Workplace Hazard Awareness; the first in the country!! Not only that, adult instructors at the squadron also received training on delivering future courses.
