Letter… from the Publisher
“Should you fear desolation when there is abundance?” —Lao-tzu
O
ver the past 7 or 8 months I have pondered making some changes to my business model here in Northeast Florida.
This should really be nothing new because if anyone knows me or has been following the magazine they will know that from time to time I like to change things up a little. Most of this was fueled by changes in technology and remaining competitive. This time was no different.
Unless you have been living under a rock or without electronic media you
probably have heard about all of the daily deals that are out there on the internet and in your email box. It is very big, very hot and makes for a very competitive market place…or does it? I thought for a number of months I needed to build one of these systems to stay competitive but as I observed and researched it closely I finally decided against it. As I observed and studied this business model I noticed that the primary
principle behind these systems is to devalue businesses, products and services to the point that many businesses have hurt themselves with it. I just could not associate it with being holistic and sustainable. These systems appear to strip mine the profits right out of small businesses and for that reason you rarely see large businesses take advantage of them. This was a concept I could not get behind because it seemed to be for the most part based on desperation and FEAR of there not being enough for everyone or someone getting your share of something (in this case the market). I simply don’t believe that. I believe there is an abundance of everything for everyone and that I need not FEAR getting mine or that there won’t be enough to go around. Life is not a concert with limited seating unless we believe it is. It is abundant and fruitful and filled with opportunity and possibilities for everyone who is willing to open their eyes and reach for it. My life has personally been a testament to this. In the end I aborted my project to build one of these systems and rather
than devaluing businesses in my field and contributing to this nomad style of consumerism for the sake of profit, I decided to build a system that would add value and meaning for my readers and more importantly for the businesses, practitioners and services in the natural health and sustainability field here in Northeast Florida.
