17:00 THE CLARA GRANT STORY Frome Festival 2011 opens with a heart- warming heritage project that celebrates the extraordinary work of Chapmanslade social reformer Clara Ellen Grant OBE (1867-1949). Clara rose to national prominence when she handed out toys in ‘farthing bundles’ to children in London’s East End. She also introduced hot school meals and founded a community centre that still runs today. Jason Thornton directs children from Chapmanslade School and Clara Grant Primary School, Tower Hamlets, as they tell her amazing life story through interviews with people who knew her and music created by students. 20:00 doors open - 23:30 TURIN BRAKES & TOM MCRAE Both acts rose from the millennium New Acoustic Movement that included Cold Play, Starsailor, David Gray and I Am Kloot. A decade on, London’s Turin Brakes and Suffolk’s Tom McRae belong in the same breath as Mumford & Sons, performing live shows that lift audiences to another realm. Brakes founding pair Olly Knights and Gale Parodjanian met McRae, the son of Anglican ministers, on the latter’s influential Hotel Café Tour, which showcases new acoustic talent on both sides of the Atlantic.
