Silk Mill Gallery is excited to present a selected show of paintings by the American Abstract Expressionist Hassel Smith (1915-2007).
This internationally recognized and collected artist was associated with the Bay Area School of Abstraction, with contemporaries Clyfford Still and Ad Reinhardt. In 1962, following a successful exhibition in London, he moved to Mousehole where he developed friendships with St Ives School artists such as Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon and Terry Frost. Smith was brought to the attention of the Tate Gallery and is represented in their permanent collection. He moved to Bristol in 1966 accepting a lectureship at the West of England College of Art. From 1981 he and his wife Donna lived in Rode.

URBAN WASTELANDS July 1st - 28th August 2011
The key word is journey… The Urban Wastelands Project is a collaboration between artist Day Bowman, award-winning filmmaker Ian Knox and Transglobal Underground / A Gathering of Strangers, the multi-national music group.
This exhibition displays Hassel Smith’s many artistic preoccupations and includes paintings such as the late, great work Without Hope They Live in Desire completed in Rode. Hassel Smith sets geometric measurement and harmonic scale in creative tension with intuitive, gestural mark-making controlled through colour. This is the first exhibition of Hassel Smith’s work since his death so take this opportunity to enjoy the work of this wonderful artist.

Through the film, the music and the paintings, the intention is to describe the journey made by many through the marine and urban wastelands of our post-industrial landscape, where the journey becomes a metaphor for mass transmigration; as Bowman says, “questioning our perceptions of place, of memory and of loss”. The music of Transglobal Underground describes a similar journey: a journey of emigration and transportation, across land or sea and sometimes a journey of the original songwriters themselves. A Gathering of Strangers itself is at the beginning of the journey… the journey to the eventual gathering itself. Bowman’s paintings will be exhibited in the Main Gallery at Black Swan Arts and in Divas Gallery. Free entrance. All welcome to the Launch Night on Friday 1st July 6pm.
