Styles & Smiles Fashion Show Thank-You
The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor
The Avon Breast Cancer Foundation, Windham- based “Team BellaDonna” activists, and the Windham High School SMILES Club would like to thank the entire community for the recent success of the “Styles & Smiles” Charity Fashion Show held at Windham High School Theater on Sunday, April 10. The event raised close to $3,000 towards the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation, directly supporting aid for breast cancer patients in the Boston and New England area, and research towards greater understandings of breast cancer’s causes and preventions. With a cast of over 60 models from children through adults, local “celebrities,” and Windham School and Town staff, it was packed with entertainment from start to finish. The Styles & SMILES event owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to its stage production crew lead by Windham’s Allyson Yennaco, the amazing “DJ Deja” sound master Denise LaCarruba, and Marc Cote. Also, Fotique Photography expertly played the role of show “paparazzi,” glamorized the runway, and provided photography services documenting the event.
Artistic Creations Salon and Salon Bogar were
extraordinary, styling and transforming 70 men, women, and children in just 3 hours prior to the show! Truly amazing! Our appreciation to Fringe Boutique, Deb Store, Mens Warehouse, Delia’s, GAP Stores, Belles’ Closet, Marshalls Salem, Lia Sophia, and Ford Flower Company for the outfits and accessories that made each and every model, from tots through adults, shine on the catwalk. The Londonderry Dance Academy provided a beautiful and poignant dance. Coca Cola of NE, Walmart Salem, Target, Shaws Windham, BJs Salem, and Culinary Capers sponsored the refreshments. Gratitude also goes to Ildi Designs and Allegra Print & Imaging for related print media. Windham High School students, teachers,
and school district staff, including the SMILES Club, Jazz Ensemble, Art Club, Culinary students, WHS Dance Club, and Fashion Design students, volunteered numerous hours for the event. A big thanks and applause to the celebrity guest models—enthusiastic School Principals Kori Becht, Deb Armfield, Brenda Morrow, and Tom Murphy, Assistant Superintendent Amanda LeCaroz, School Board Member Stephanie Wimmer, and Windham Town Development Director Laura Scott. WSB Chair Ed Gallagher, Dr. John InDelicato, and Honorable State Representative Mary Griffin did an outstanding job as “mock project runway” judges. We’d also like to thank all those that so generously contributed raffle items and baskets, including: Artistic Creations Salon, AnnMarie O’Neil/Avon, Backyard Power Solutions, Belle’s Closet, Bogar Salon, Canobie Lake Park, Capital Theater for Performing Arts, Capri Pizza, Boston Celtics/the Sanders Family, Crown Jewelers, The NH Children’s Museum, Chili’s, Chunky’s, NH Fisher Cats, Fotique Photography, Image Sunwear, Gymboree, Indra City Salon, Laser Craze, Lia Sophia, Melanie Cullinane, McAuliffe Space Center, Mobile Computer Solutions, McDonald’s of Windham, Mel’s Funway, NH Monarchs, Ragged Mountain Golf Course, Salon Bogar, SEE Science Center, Shabby Chic Sweets Boutique, Stonyfield Farm, Windham’s Village Bean, Wasabi Restaurant, Windham Country Club, Windham Deli, Windham MOMS Club, Windham Newcomers & Friends Club, Windham Women’s Business Connection, and You’re Fired Pottery Studios. For anyone that we have forgotten to mention
here, know that your efforts were not. This event was truly a rare and remarkable collaboration, and an inspiration to those that attended. Team BellaDonna is accepting donations at www.
avonwalk.org, where folks can also see how the money raised is distributed to aid those in our own area.

Annual Rabies Clinic Thank-You
I just wanted to take the time and thank the community that came out and enjoyed the Dog Fair/Rabies Clinic at Griffin Park on April 9. This has replaced the Annual Rabies Clinic that took place at the Fire Station. It was a huge success and the weather was perfect. I want to acknowledge Granite State Animal Hospital for administrating the rabies vaccinations. They also had the Kennel Cough vaccine available and Micro-chipping if anyone was interested. They also brought along a nail clipper/groomer that clipped dogs and cats’ nails for free. I also wanted to give a special thank-you to all of the local businesses that came out and participated. Rockingham Emergency Veterinary, Woof Woof, Karen Reid (Animal Reiki), Woof It Down, and Roberta Kosek from Basenji Rescue. They were all nice enough to give out free samples, do demonstrations, answer any questions, and have a mini raffle. The Windham Town Clerk’s Office was also there registering dogs. There were 55 dogs that were registered that day! I also wanted to recognize Al Seifert, the Animal Control Officer, for taking the time and come out and help. Above all, I want to thank Cheryl Haas, the Recreation Co-coordinator, for making this all possible. If anyone missed out on this great event, keep
your eyes open in the newspapers, postings around Town, local cable channel, and on the Town Website for next year’s fair!
Nicole Merrill, Town Clerk - Windham Live Free or Die?
Did we wake up one morning and find out no
one is representing New Hampshire citizens? We voted for representatives who promised to
grow the economy and cut wasteful spending. What we got is a bunch of greedy House thugs who want to abolish public workers’ rights to negotiate. But that’s not the worst of it. They think
people with developmental disabilities; brain injuries, and mental illness are defective and should be sterilized, banished, and left to die. The budget cuts will be far-reaching. The delivery systems and infrastructures will be dismantled. Higher unemployment and wasted lives will follow.

SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIREMEDICAL CENTER & FOUNDATIONMEDICAL PARTNERS
Southern New Hampshire Health System: A higher level of care where you live and work.
“When I learned that I needed back surgery, I was concerned about the recovery time. A new granddaughter was on the way and I wanted to be able to hold her.” - Mary Danboise, (pictured left) with her physical therapist, Kari Rabito, MSPT
Mary benefited from advanced surgical techniques and rehabilitation services offered through The Health System. And when her granddaughter was born, she welcomed her with open arms.
Health care designed around me means...
My son, who experiences Down’s syndrome,
has a successful life through supports he receives. He is independent, has three jobs, is a taxpayer, and a consumer. Without modest funding, he would have a bleak future of dependency. Parents already carry most of the weight, continuing to be primary caregivers after our “children” reach adulthood. But we can’t be two places at once. We must earn incomes to continue being part of the team. Without some supports, we will need the state to do it all, 24/7. That is truly unaffordable. It has
taken 30 years of working together with families, providers, and the state to come this far. The state cannot afford to
throw away the free care we families provide. I urge everyone to be the voice for those who can’t speak for themselves. Contact your Senators. Tell them to create a completely new budget and restore the Developmental Services funding. It’s not only the right thing to do; it’s the financially smart, responsible thing to do.
