Hudson~Litchfield News Volume 21 Number 39 April 22, 2011 20 Pages A Special Sunday Afternoon at PMA by Len Lathrop Starting with a duet from Adrian and
Michaella Niceforo, another afternoon Piano Recital began under the direction of Sister Lorraine. The grand piano was center stage as the 31 students made their way up the three steps and to the piano bench and began to play. For some students, this was a first time, but it wasn’t the first for Sister, as it was her 22nd. Since 1989, Sister Lorraine has taught piano at the Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson.

When Sister was asked about today’s students versus those 22 years ago, all were very talented individuals; today’s students need to be challenged a little more, as there are so many other interests now in the student’s lives. Family members filled the second floor auditorium with its idyllic pasture scene painted on the back wall. Sprays of flowers decorated the stage. There were no karaoke machines, iPods, or other sources of electronic music—just the music created by very talented hands on the grand piano.
Easter Bunny Joins Hudson for Breakfast
by Doug Robinson Sponsored by Hudson Junior Women’s Club, over 300 children, along with their parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors, attended the annual Easter Bunny Breakfast at the Hudson Community Center this past weekend.
In addition to a hot breakfast of eggs, bacon, and pancakes, all enjoyed the delicious array of juices, cereal, breads, and pastries. The Community Center tables were covered with springtime pastel colors and balloons, adding that festive feeling. Children were also invited to participate in a variety of activities, including face painting, Easter egg coloring, building a Styrofoam Easter bunny, and watercolor drawings. One of the most popular activates involved planting seeds, which
would then be later transported and planted in the butterfly garden at Benson Park. Children were invited to fill a plastic cup with soil, choose from a variety of four flowering seeds (marigold, petunia, dill, or nasturtium), place the cup into a sealed baggie, and then take the plant home to watch it grow. On June 4, children will then bring their plants and herbs to Benson
Park and they will plant them into the butterfly garden. As children filled their cups, volunteer Michelle Champion instructed the young planters that “Butterflies love these flowers and by your planting them, we will have lots of beautiful butterflies at the Park.”

Pancakes were being eaten, but the eyes of the small breakfast eaters were checking the doorway to the cafeteria at Litchfield Middle School. Everyone knew that the Easter Bunny would arrive soon. The annual Easter Bunny Breakfast is a project of Litchfield’s Women’s Club. A long table was lined with raffle prizes. In the back of the cafeteria were games for the kids.

Selectmen Fire Volunteer
by Doug Robinson After watching the April 5 Hudson Board of Selectmen’s meeting, one would have to assume that our right to freedom of speech stops, become compromised, needs to be altered, or better yet, requires to be surrendered when you become a volunteer member on a Hudson Committee. Chairman Jasper stated that Dilworth doesn’t understand his role as a Sewer Utility Member, Selectman Coutu stated he took Dilworth’s words personally and wanted an “apology,” Selectman Luszey commented that “Howard needs to use language that does not insult the Board,” while Selectmen Maddox and Nadeau both stated Dilworth had a “right to freedom of speech.” Chairman Jasper stated that he did send a letter to Dilworth to meet with “myself, the Town Administrator, and the Chairman of the Sewer Utility; he refused, which has brought us to this point.” In an e-mail written on February 10, Dilworth wrote, “I do
not know how many of you [Utility Committee members, Town of Hudson Utility employee Donna Sommers, and Selectmen’s Liaison to the Utility Roger Coutu] noticed there is a new line item in Cost Center 5562, Sewer O&M. During the previous month, Line Item 103, Salary, Temporary was added to this cost center and $700 was charged against it. This is not something that was
employees in the Hudson Sewer Utility, so why would we start now?” Dilworth continued in his e-mail. “I would suggest that the cost of the interns should stay in the Engineering Department. It is Engineering that they are doing, so the salary cost should be here that it can accurately be tracked.” “If the utility is to be charge, then it should be through … Other Professional Services. budgeted for. The interesting thing about this is that apparently anyone can go and ask that a line item be added to the budget at any time during the year and it will be done. What are the parameters for approving expenditures for items not in the budget? What are the parameters for adding off budget or non-budget items?” “We don’t have any engineering

arrived, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Cody from Griffin Middle School gathered the kids on the stage and read stories to them. When questions were asked, hands waved in the air, as everyone wanted to participate. Ella and Kailey Powers
enjoyed breakfast with their parents. “Did you see our dresses?” asked Ella. “They match,” she said proudly. Finally it was time for the Easter Bunny to arrive. He came with a friend and they strolled around the cafeteria, greeting everyone before settling on the stage for pictures and visits.
