Salem High School’s Matthew Cannone, a resident

of Windham, was recently awarded the John E. Burke Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented annually to a high school senior boy and girl who exemplify the principles of sportsmanship, integrity, and dependability on and off the basketball court. Candidates for the award are nominated during the season by IAABO basketball officials throughout the state. Nominations are validated by coaches and others knowledgeable about the background of the nominees. The award recipients are selected by a vote of the members of the state executive committee. The award takes on added prestige when you realize that this is one of the few awards where the class or size of the school does not play a part in the selection process. There are only two award winners for all of New Hampshire. The award is sponsored by the NH State Board of

Approved Basketball Officials in honor of the late John E. Burke, a former president of our board who officiated high school and college games for 33 years. He was one of the top officials in New England. The ability of Mr. Burke to set the highest standard of conduct during games was an inspiration to thousands of players and officials during his career. After Mr. Burke passed away in 1962, the New Hampshire Basketball officials chose to remember him and continue his ideals with the establishment of the John E. Burke Sportsmanship Award. Each award recipient receives an individual plaque to commemorate the award. The permanent plaque will be displayed at Salem High School for the next year, until another recipient is chosen.

he could have his catch, still on the end of his line, measured. Rick Silva of the Rotary Club carefully aligned the fish against a yellow yardstick and announced that Drake’s fish is 10 3/4 inches long, giving Drake the lead by three- quarters of an inch. Jonah Ludwig, 7, approached the measuring table with a stringer of three fish. They measure 11 1/2, 9 1/2, and 4 inches, respectively. Jonah was now in the lead by three- quarters of an inch. Julia Acker, 7, approached the table with a white bucket carried by her father, Keith. The fish inside was

a yellow perch; the others have been rainbow trout. Her fish was laid out on the table and measured 13 1/4 inches, giving Julia the lead by an inch and a quarter. “There is a story with this fish,”

Julia’s dad said. “Julia was fishing next to Riley, 5, and Donna Lucinkas and the two young anglers both thought they had hooked a fish and reeled in their lines. The lines had drifted and crossed. When they were sorted out, it was revealed that the fish was actually on Julia’s hook,”

Keith Acker said. When all was caught and measured and time had run out, the winners were announced and trophies awarded. The largest fish to be recorded

was caught by Julia Acker with her 13 1/2 inch yellow perch. The smallest fish recorded at four inches was ironically caught and the trophy awarded to – Jonah.

Canoeing Tips

Canoeing is a great family activity, and our rivers and streams Flexible Display Ad Proof Sheet and Schedule Tracking

provide a variety of opportunities for fun and enjoyment ranging from slow, idyllic stretches to adrenaline-charged, swift water. Regardless of the paddling activity chosen, the following tips should always be taken into consideration for a safe, enjoyable trip: • Always wear a personal flotation device. Even if just going a short distance, traveling in cold or swift-moving waters can be dangerous.

• Dress to prevent hypothermia. Regardless of the environment, cold water can kill. Hypothermia is the rapid loss of the body’s core temperature. In cold water, body heat is lost 25 times faster than in air of the same temperature. Dress in layers of clothing that will trap body heat, even when wet. Polypropylene or wool are good materials for such conditions. Avoid 100-percent cotton fabrics.

• Always stay within the limit of the boat’s maximum carrying capacity. The boat’s capacity plate gives the maximum number of persons and the maximum weight of the equipment and gear on board that the boat can safely accommodate. Overloading is a leading cause of capsizes of small boats.

• Know your abilities. Do not attempt to navigate a swift- moving river or stream if you have not had previous training. Fast water is extremely powerful: what looks like a fun ride could be deadly. Always paddle with more than one experienced boater in your group so that if trouble occurs, help is nearby.

• Watch for river hazards. Be alert for river characteristics that could cause harm to your boat or persons on board. Strainers, such as fallen tree limbs, which “strain” the water through while pinning solid objects, are all hazards that should be avoided.
