A cold and breezy Hedgehog Park was the scene of piscatorial anticipation on Saturday as boys and girls up to age 15, rod and reel at the ready, awaited the start of the annual Recreation Department and Rotary Club of Greater Salem’s fishing derby. Many of the up to 500 fish stocked into the pond for the event could be seen jumping and rising, leaving ringlets on the surface of the water, tempting and – as some would allege – taunting the young anglers. Cody Stys, 5, along with his grandparents Rusty and Paula Stys, anxiously awaited the official start. Bracing against the chilled breeze, Paula Stys recounted Cody’s earlier fishing trips with his dad, Craig Stys.

“Our son Craig, Cody’s dad, used to take Cody fishing, but never put a hook on his line because he didn’t want him to get hooked and they were in a boat,” said Paula. Her smile faded as she added, “Craig died of cancer on December 11, 2010, so we brought him to the derby.” At the official start, Rusty announced to Cody that they can fish now and prepared the line for Cody. The bobber at the end of the line is propelled by Rusty in a long, arcing cast. When the bobber created a small splash in the lake, he handed off the rod to Cody, who settled in for a possible fish strike while grandpa gave gentle and reassuring advice to his grandson. There was a hook on it this time. Closer to the northern end of the pond, Drake Gonyea, 5, hot-footed it to the judge’s table so continued to page 5- Derby

by S. Aaron Shamshoyan The Town Wide Road Stabilization Committee, represented by Selectman Mike Lyons, presented their road program for 2012 through 2021 at the Selectmen’s meeting. The plan calls for 31,000 feet of road, about six miles, to be repaired through 2016. “I would think these six miles of road here, everybody would agree, is pretty deplorable,” Lyons said. The program presented last year included Stiles Road and Pelham roadwork, but was defeated at the ballot. Other roads, including Brookdale Road, which were part of the 2011 installment, failed at the ballot, but were resurrected at the Second Deliberative Session. Chairman Beth Roth was in favor of the plan, saying the roads have deteriorated over the years. “We’re correcting a lot of neglect over the years,” she said, “People are just frustrated that they want their roads taken care of.” Selectman Stephen Campbell was opposed, saying taxpayers can’t afford another increate. “It’s that they said, I don’t have that much money,” he said. The board voted three-two in favor of allowing the committee to draft a plan with the recommendations, with Selectmen Hargreaves and Campbell in the opposition.
