WeLCoMe to ..... ALVIRo PeteRsen

Alviro Petersen, who will be Glamorgan’s captain in 2011, is a thirty year-old right-handed opening batsman, who has played in nine Tests, fourteen One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals for South Africa.

He made his first-class debut for Northerns against Western Province in March 2001, and after a string of impressive batting performances during his first two seasons saw him fast-tracked into the South Africa A side. In 2006/07 he made the step up to the national side, featuring in the one-day series against Zimbabwe. During the past few seasons, Alviro has become a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket in South Africa, creating a record for the highest number of runs in a domestic season, and on the tour to India in 2009/10, an injury to Mark Boucher led to his elevation to the Test side, with Alviro opening the batting at Eden Gardens in Kolkata where he duly became only the third South African to score a hundred on his Test Match debut.

Alviro has enjoyed plenty of success with the bat in domestic cricket in South Africa. For example in 2004/05 he was Man-of-the-Match in the final of the Twenty20 competition, as he made an unbeaten 78 off 62 balls as the Titans defeated the Warriors by eight wickets. In 2006/07, and again in 2009/10, he appeared in the final of the Twenty20 competition for the Highveld Lions, and his decent form in Twenty20 cricket saw his inclusion in the South African T20 side against their West Indian counterparts in Antigua in 2010. Besides playing for the Highveld Lions in the Champions League competition, Alviro helped the Lions reach the semi-final of the MTN 40 overs competition in 2010/11.

He also has plenty of experience of English conditions, having played in 2003 for Millom in the North Lancashire and Cumbria Premier League before spending three successful summers with Enfield in the Lancashire League. Indeed, in 2004 – his first summer with the Enfield club – Alviro amassed 1058 at an average of 58.77, and in his second season with the Lancashire club he narrowly missed out by just eleven runs to pass the thousand mark again.
