(Friendly) somerset v Glamorgan at taunton, April 5th, 6th, 2010 Umpires: G thorpe and P Hill

scorers: G e stickley and A K Hignell

Glamorgan suffered their first reverse of the season in their two-day friendly with Somerset which saw each side allocated a maximum of 100 overs. As it turned out, Glamorgan’s first innings lasted just 54.3 overs as they lost their last seven wickets for 60 runs after being put in to bat in damp and cloudy conditions. The South African pairing of Charl Willoughby and Alfonso Thomas extracted some lavish movement as the visitors slipped to 19/2. Will Bragg and Jamie Dalrymple then added 87 for the third wicket, but their good work was underdone by the post-lunch collapse. The clatter of wickets was then replaced by the sound of the ball regularly bouncing off the boundary boards as Marcus Trescothick feasted on the Glamorgan bowling as he compiled a 56-ball fifty. But in the final session, the former England batsman was upstaged by a superb innings from James Hildreth who unfurled a series of high-class strokes and seemed poised to post a rapid century when he was bowled by Dean Cosker having struck 15 fours and 2 sixes in his innings of 96 from just 76 balls. Trescothick soon followed, and on the second morning, it was left to Peter Trego with a lusty 36-ball fifty to re-ignite the Somerset innings before the home side declared after 70 overs with a lead of 137 runs. The Somerset attack then found, under the sunny skies, less assistance compared with the previous day as Gareth Rees and Will Bragg batted with great assurance in sharing an opening stand of 144 which more than wiped off the arrears. But with only 45 overs at their disposal, Glamorgan were never in a position to set Somerset a daunting target, and despite some breezy blows by Mark Wallace, Somerset were left with a target of 108 from their remaining 30 overs. They made a poor start as new signing Nick Compton com- pleted a pair, but his early departure only heralded the arrival of Craig Kieswetter who immediately showed the form that a few weeks earlier had led to his call-up to England’s one-day side as he blasted a half-century from 58 balls as Somerset eased to their target with 9.4 overs and nine wickets in hand.
