Derbyshire v Glamorgan at Derby on April 21st, 22md, 23rd and 24th, 2010 Umpires: R K Illingworth and V A Holder scorers: J M Brown and A K Hignell

After the euphoria of their victory at Lord’s, Glamorgan were brought back down to earth at Derby as they were beaten in an enthralling contest on the realigned square which gave assistance to the bowlers – both fast and slow - throughout the contest. After a feisty opening burst from Steffan Jones, Jim Allenby and Ben Wright improved Glamorgan’s position with well-crafted fifties, before a typically jaunty half-century from Mark Wallace helped the visitor’s secure two batting points. The Glamorgan wicket-keeper then took a pair of smart catches as Derbyshire’s batsmen also struggled against the new ball. Their innings duly bore a marked similarity to Glamorgan’s as the middle order blunted the visitor’s attack, with Greg Smith and Garry Park adding a record 156 for the fifth wicket. Four wickets then tumbled in quick succession to the new ball, but what proved to be the decisive passage of play came before lunch on the third day as Jones and Smith added 78 in fourteen overs – another best for Derbyshire against Glamorgan - to crucially extend their lead. Glamorgan’s batsmen, apart from Gareth Rees, struggled for the second time in the match and, whilst the opener proceeded to score the first century of the summer, there was a regular procession of wickets at the other end as the wicket, with regular puffs of dust, increasingly assisted the spinners. Indeed, Rees became one of four victims for Smith who switched from seam to spin after lunch and, after his career-best score, played a major role with the ball as Derbyshire were left with a target of 121. Chris Rogers, who had amassed over 300 runs in Derbyshire’s opening game of the summer, then carefully guided his side to victory half an hour before lunch on the final day as the Peakites recorded their first Championship success on a wicket
