Spitfires and symphonies

The Battle Proms Concerts are taking flight again this summer, with music, cavalry and fireworks

If you prefer your Beethoven to be accompanied by Spitfire aerial displays, Napoleonic horsemanship and live cannon firing, then the Battle Proms Concerts this summer will be just your cup of tea. Six concerts will take place at historic venues across the country, including Highclere Castle, Blenheim Palace and Burghley House. The ideal way to expereince them is to take a picnic, and enjoy music that equals the grandeur of the setting, from Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor to Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

Thomas Cook, providers of travel advice since 1873, are on a roll: they’re publishing dozens of new travel guides this year, including a new series of British titles. V

Of course, it is Beethoven’s Battle

Symphony that gives this concert series its name, and this will be performed, unusually, just as the composer intended – with 193 live firing cannons as part of the score. This should be a good aural warm-up for the firework display later in the evening. Proceeds from the concert go to the

charity Combat Stress, which helps veterans of the Armed Forces and Merchant Navy with psychological injuries occasioned in the line of duty. Tickets can be booked at www. battleproms.com or by calling (01432) 355416.
