Just the ticket for PCI

The Lowry, a prestigious theatre and arts centre, aims is to bring together a wide variety of performing and visual arts under one roof and open its doors to the best in entertainment and education in the arts, giving everyone access to new areas of creativity and embracing the local community.

The Lowry’s ticket agency offers tickets for events at venues in Manchester and beyond. It was formed in 2005 to offer online and phone ticket sales for events around the UK. Quaytickets sells more than 750,000 tickets a year for thousands of events.

The challenge

PCI compliance is critical to businesses that conduct large volumes of credit card transactions online, such as The Lowry’s Quaytickets. PCI compliance helps these companies establish best practices that keep customer credit card information safe and private, as well as ensuring that they won’t be buried by crippling fines for non-compliance or security breaches. “As an online ticket vendor that handles customer

credit card data, The Lowry needed a log management solution to meet PCI DSS compliance regulations,” says Darren Mullin, IT Manager at The Lowry. “But we also wanted a solution that would address our security and best practices needs across the whole company.” The Lowry required a PCI compliance solution that would work with their existing infrastructure and legacy systems, as well as address their need for security information and event management.

Because the IT department is so small, The Lowry determined that an investment in a stable, robust enterprise solution would be well worth it. They wanted a solution that would largely manage itself, without too much support from the IT department – something that could run in the background without significant intervention.

Solution

“After doing some more research on the best solutions available – and the ones that would suit our organisation – we decided to move forward with LogLogic. Their appliance was practically plug and

play, came with its own storage, fit within our budget and would help us achieve PCI compliance,” says Mullin. Once the decision had been approved, the company purchased the solution from Network Defence, a reseller The Lowry had worked with previously, that was familiar with the company’s network and business. Mullin was impressed with the quick installation. With minimal help from a LogLogic and Network Defence engineer, Mullin was able to set up and configure the appliance in just a few hours.

Benefits

Using LogLogic for PCI compliance has the potential to save The Lowry a significant amount of money over time. In the event of a credit card security issue, PCI compliance alone could save the company thousands of pounds. And because the LogLogic solution is so easy to use and manage, they don’t need to hire additional staff to manage the PCI compliance solution. Beyond PCI compliance, LogLogic also alerts The Lowry to any potential external threats. If someone is trying to hack into the web site – for example through brute force attacks – the LogLogic appliance alerts the IT team. Prior to LogLogic, Mullin and his team would have no idea an attack was happening until a security event had already occurred.

The connection between the company’s web servers and back-end database is critical. If the connection goes down, The Lowry cannot sell tickets online. Using LogLogic, The Lowry receives alerts about any downtime as it’s happening. Without LogLogic the company wouldn’t know a problem existed until a customer phoned in complaining that they couldn’t buy a ticket.

Mullin has also experienced unexpected benefits by using LogLogic. While setting up a connection for a client through the firewall to the internal network, the test connection showed that connection wasn’t working. Initially Mullin couldn’t determine where the problem was, but by checking the logs in LogLogic he was able to see where the traffic was going through and where it wasn’t. This enabled him to discover the source of the problem and rectify it quickly and easily. And whereas this might have taken days to sort out manually, using LogLogic it took just minutes.
