Rapid response for St John Ambulance LogRhythm ensures perfect health for PCI DSS compliance at St John Ambulance.
St John Ambulance is the nation’s leading first aid charity. The organisation helps people learn first aid so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
The challenge
Generating income through its first aid training, service delivery programmes as well as via charitable donations, St John Ambulance processes around 80,000 card payments every year.
This volume of
transactions means that the organisation is actually classed as a level three PCI DSS merchant, and must therefore comply with the associated regulatory mandates. Among others, these include requirement 10, a rule which mandates organisations to store logs in a central, accessible repository as well as monitor them on a continual basis. Traditionally, all log data at St John Ambulance was handled manually. In light of the PCI DSS requirements however, the organisation soon recognised that this approach would be unsustainable.
The solution
Keen to automate the log management process, St John Ambulance assessed a number of products before selecting a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution from LogRhythm. As Karl Heydenrych, IT Director, St John Ambulance explains: “LogRhythm stood out as being more flexible and configurable than other solutions we evaluated. We felt this would ensure a better fit for our business and bring a faster return on investment, an important factor for us
as a charity. Additionally, LogRhythm was the only solution we found which offered integrated File Integrity Monitoring. This negated the need for us to purchase an additional solution to meet the specific requirements (11.5) of PCI DSS and also simplified and strengthened our security, audit and compliance processes.” St John Ambulance now uses LogRhythm to automatically gather the log data from more than 400 heterogeneous devices, systems and applications, including routers, switches and firewalls. This data is then archived to a central repository where it can easily be retrieved and reported on as and when required. Heydenrych continues: “As part of our corporate
governance responsibilities, St John Ambulance places great importance on looking after its customers, donors and partners, including protecting the credit card details that we process. However, LogRhythm has done more than just tick the PCI DSS compliance box, it also helps us keep a watchful eye on network activity. We now get regular alerts on any abnormal activity, such as external web-based attacks or attempts to modify privileged accounts. These alerts reassure us that the protective measures we have in place are operating exactly as they should be.” Now that the original objective for installing LogRhythm at St John Ambulance – namely PCI DSS compliance – has been met, the organisation is considering how it can develop the system further. “With LogRhythm we can gain greater visibility of our IT infrastructure through a single dashboard. As such, we’re currently working to assess how best we can realise the solution’s full potential and roll it out further across the whole organisation.”
