ICELAND AIRWAVES THE HIPPEST MUSIC-FESTIVAL
Te annual Iceland Airwaves music festival has become known for its intimacy and party spirit. Te festival has been called „the hippest long weekend on the annual music-festival calendar“ by David Fricke, Editor-in-Chief of Rolling Stone Magazine. Te inaugural Iceland Airwaves took place in 1999 as a one-off event in an aircraft hangar at Reykjavík Airport. Subsequently, it has become one of the premier showcases for new music in the world with hundreds of journalists and industry people in attendance.
Te festival has flourished in the last 12 years and last year foreign visitors to Iceland Airwaves brought almost half a billion ISK to the local economy in just one weekend. Tis estimate is based on a survey of foreign visitors to the festival which found that a total of 313 million ISK was spent in Reykjavik during the period, and that didn‘t include the cost of flights to the country or any additional expenses outside the city. Results showed that each foreign visitor spent an average of 25.000 ISK per day in Reykjavik on accommodation, food and restaurants, nightlife, transport and shopping.
Last year’s festival attracted some 4.650 people, 48% of which were foreign tourists. Tourism around Iceland is also reported to have benefited from the festival, with popular attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, Gullfoss, Geysir all reporting increased numbers and businesses outside the capital such as car rental companies, restaurants, accommodation services also reporting increased sales.
