The Ontario Construction Report – April 2011 – PAGE OCR C3

nized Aecon as one of Canada’s best em- ployers for 2011.

The future promises more growth built on solid and improving relationships with previous clients, subtrades and the commu- nity at large.

“It’s important to remember

that we’ve now invested eight years in the present organization in the Ottawa market – relationships with the trades and owners have significantly improved.” “The 2011 marketplace seems to offer more and better opportunities than I antici- pated a year ago,” Persson says. “We’re al- ready seen many opportunities this spring. I think things are going to remain pretty good. With our capacity and experience, we are going to be very aggressive in pick- ing up some more new and larger projects in 2011 and 2012.”

Moving forward, Persson says that within the next five years, “hopefully we’ll continue to be invited to tender or pursue virtually every project in town and that we’ll be the natural choice of owners, when it comes to choosing the general contractors they think that can do the job well and add value to it.”

This process will be built one project at

a time. “Once you get jobs (from an owner) the second time, you know you must have done something right the first time.” Deciding which projects to pursue is something that cannot be carved in stone. “We have staff members working on big and small projects, and our decisions are more based on (staff) availability and the

work load we see ahead.” This diversity of course is helped by Aecon’s ability to draw on specialized resources from other offices and divisions. “We can be a one-stop shop,” he said. “In most projects we can offer all the disci- plines required in small to large projects. And I expect that as the years progress, our ability to co-ordinate civil as well as build- ing construction, we’ll be able to incorpo- rate the building, industrial, services and utility aspects into the larger integrated projects that are on the horizon.” Of course, Aecon works on unionized projects, as the combination of skills and labour force requirements for the largest projects requires union labour. “Very few non-union trades are able to go after the major jobs in town,” he said. Competition for the larger projects, of

course, remains intense. While the number of contractors who can handle $80 to $100 million projects can be counted on one hand, inevitably several of these well-es- tablished and successful businesses will bid on the large projects. These challenges now, however, are resolved by that magical and vital combi- nation of local experience, proven relation- ships, and a deep understanding of what needs to be done to compete successfully.

Aecon will continue to fine tune and evolve in its approaches, operating in the ideal corporate structure, with lots of local autonomy yet powerful support and re- sources from other offices in the network. “We appreciate the roots and traditions of this community and think we can com- bine this with a powerful yet relevant na- tional perspective,” Persson said. “I’m excited for the future.” For more information, call Aecon at Our phone is (613) 591-3007.
