The Council of Ontario Construction Associations (COCA) has recognized sev- eral leaders for their industry support and contributions. At COCA’s annual general meeting on February 24, the association recognized John Vander Doelen, director, workplace insurance, health and safety policy branch with the Ministry of Labour with the new Industry Ally Award. The award “recog- nizes an individual or organization in- volved in a related industry, government department or agency whose efforts or as- sistance has aided COCA and the Ontario construction industry (to) recognize im- provements in the areas of standards, effi- ciencies or health and safety,” COCA says. The association notes on its website

that Vander Doelan should be recognized for “his tireless work co-ordinating and re- sourcing the individual volume of work re- quired for the completion of the Dean Panel review.

“His dedication to moving the policy development process forward and com-

mitment to stakeholder relations ensured that our industry was kept abreast of the evolving thinking of the panel and offered the opportunity to consult fully. Domenic Mattina from Mattina Me- chanical received the Cliff Bulmer Award, recognizing “an individual who makes an outstanding contribution to the relationship between the construction industry and the government at Queens’ Park.

“In 2010, Domenic participated in the Dean Panel Review . . . as one of only three employer representatives . Domenic bore the heavy workload and tight dead- lines with determination, participating fully and ensuring that the needs, opinions and experience of Ontario’s construction employers were well represented in the consultation process. Also, COCA announced two presi-

dent’s awards, recognizing outstanding contributions from a member association or a staff member of a member association to the association, to Denis Shank of the Sudbury Construction Association and Martha George of the Grand Valley Con- struction Association.

STAFF WRITER – The Ottawa Construction News

The Niagara construction industry enjoyed some St. Patricks’ Day entertainment at a special Construction Hockey Night at the Niagara Ice Dogs game against the Mis- sissagua St. Mikes’ Majors in St. Catharines.

During the first and second periods, members of the Niagara Home Builders’ As- sociation (NHBA) and the Niagara Construction Association (NCA) faced off for a shootout challenge. NHBA Goalie John Fracchioni and NCA Goalie Wes Hummel both claimed victory after facing five shots and a play-off shot during the challenge before a sellout crowd. Shooters for the NHBA Team, wearing green shirts for St. Patrick’s Day included Jason Disher, Ted Brown, Mike Kennedy, Helmut Friesen and Chuck McShane. The chal- lengers, sporting Falcon warm-up shirts, included Ron Grossi Jr., Rob Grossi, Marcus Franken, Rich Heikoop and Sean Oaks. Players said ice conditions were the deciding factor in the results.

“I want to thank these guys for pulling on the skates,” says NHBA president Chuck

McShane. “Some of us haven’t skated for a number of years and it was great to get to- gether in the Jr. B Falcon dressing room and share some memories.”
