just as the recession hit in 2009. “It was aggressive bid- ding,” he said. However, solid drawings from aTRIM Architects cou- pled with excellent co-ordination with the college, suppli- ers and subtrades allowed the project to proceed smoothly. “The job went very smoothly,” he said. “We had an excellent superintendent (Ted Haslam) and project man- ager (Sean Racher). We’re fortunate we had good sub- trades and great mechanical and electrical contractors – everyone worked together to push the job and turn it around on schedule.” Established in 1983, T. R. Hinan focuses on institu- tional and public sector work. “We do municipal work, pumping stations, sewage plants, school and hospital work,” Hinan said. “This project is a good representation of what we do.”

General contractor T.R. Hinan Contractors Inc. didn’t seek out the attention before receiving recognition as the Niagara Construction Association’s (NCA) 2010 project of the year in the $1 million to $5 million category – a fact which makes this award even more significant to the well- established St. Catharines contractor. Terry Hinan said a NCA board member encouraged the award nomination for his company’s work on for new Ni- agara College Culinary Institute addition at Niagara-on- the-Lake, an indication that Hinan’s project team had earned the respect of others in the industry. The project, a 6,000 sq. ft. structure (3,000 sq. ft. on the ground floor with a 3,000 sq. ft. basement) has excep- tional challenges because of the amount of kitchen equip- ment and facilities required for this instructional facility. “This building includes a teaching lab for the cooking
school,” he said.
Project work, on a competitive lump-sum bid, started in the fall of 2009, with work completed in time for col- lege classes in September, 2010, he said. “We had a fairly aggressive schedule,” Hinan said.
“We needed to co-ordinate the kitchen equipment with mechanical, electrical and kitchen equipment suppliers.” “The rough-in for the mechanical and electrical is up through the suspended slab from the basement. Every piece of kitchen equipment has tie in connections. It makes it a fussy job.”
As all of the floors are epoxy coated, “there wasn’t any room for error,” he said. “You couldn’t be punching holes after the floor was done. Things had to be done right, the first time.”
Hinan says his company succeeded in winning the job Norjohn
