We all may think we know what a classic car is, but, as Danny Cobbs discovers, it’s not all about the Ferraris and Bugattis. Austin Allegro anyone?


YOU DON’T NEED to be fully paid-up motoring anorak to appreciate the cars of yesteryear. The sinuous lines of a Jaguar E-Type or the breathtaking beauty and intricate craftsmanship of a hand-built 1930s Rolls Royce will undoubtedly tug on the heartstrings of the most hardened of anti-car zealots. And our love affair with classic cars is continually reaffirmed


on an annual basis as thousands of fans brave the elements and line the route of the London to Brighton Veteran Car rally to catch a glimpse of cars that if they were people would long be retired. Not so with these old-timers of the highways. Irrespective

of their age – and bear in mind some were created at the dawn of the 20th century – these cars were built to be driven, and driven they will be. And this is the very ethos of a true classic car owner. For this article, I’ve delved into the world of classic cars and


been amazed to find the unlikeliest examples of cars which now carry the prefix of ‘classic’. The biggest misconception is when a car reaches a certain age it goes from being an old banger to something highly desirable and valuable. Of course many do, however there are some exceptions to this rule which are still a long way off from drawing their pensions, yet they too have still become classics, albeit with the confusing appellation of a ‘modern’ classic. The Bugatti Veyron, the world’s fastest production car is one, as is the Audi TT and Mercedes SLS AMG. Personally, I’m predicting great things for the Porsche Cayman S and, believe it or not, the Citroen DS3. That’s the thing with terming a car a classic – once they


reach this platform their worth can become completely disproportionate to their initial cost. For example, take the Austin
