Pleasurable Padstow has it all
Padstow is one of those fishing ports which makes you know you must be in Cornwall.
It’s just as perfect as that.
If you walk round the little streets, or pause a while to gaze out across the harbour, you will begin to feel some of the timelessness of this place, which has been a community for several thousand years and always associated with the sea and seagoing.
Today, it is a favourite spot for tourists who want to experience the real Cornwall, and to enjoy the many sights and sensations along this part of the coast.
The town of Padstow is in a narrow gulley on the west side of the River Camel estuary, giving shelter from the prevailing winds and keeping the temperature up.
Like most ports, building began on the quayside and moved upwards and
outwards, so you will find the older buildings close to the harbour.
As the population grew, more cottages were provided, along with premises connected with the fishing industry.
The result is a charming huddle of many shaped and coloured buildings, many of which have been adapted from their original purpose and are now holiday homes or local accommodation.
Padstow abounds with good restaurants, including Rick Stein’s which has helped to put Cornish food on the map, and there are plenty of pubs, cafes and takeaways to keep every visitor happy.
Rick himself has also opened a popular fish and chip shop, as well as his restaurant, cookery school and deli.
If you want to find out more about Padstow there is a small museum covering the town’s history.

View of Padstow Caravanning in Cornwall
The Caravan Club is Europe’s premier touring organisation. With the largest membership of any touring club, it represents the interests of one million caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tenters.
Caravanning offers freedom and flexibility – the ability to move with the good weather and pick the perfect location for whatever you want to do, while making the most of the great outdoors.
For 2011 it looks like the ‘Great Escape’ will become the ‘Great British staycation’ as people rediscover the
delights of domestic breaks, and Cornwall has always been an extremely popular choice for caravanners.
The club offers a choice of some 130 destinations in Cornwall – 10 larger Caravan Club Sites spread across the county, and around 120 Certificated Locations, or CLs.
CLs are smaller, maximum 5-van sites on farms, beside pubs and even in the grounds of stately homes, for the exclusive use of Club members.
Club members come from all walks of life and all age groups.

Retired people who are unrestricted by such considerations as annual leave can ‘holiday’ when the desire takes them.
Families are also rediscovering the delights of outdoor adventures – from rock pooling to den building, and family expeditions on bikes or on foot, with picnic treats at the ready.
Festival-goers too are finding out that having a part share in a caravan or camper van offers more comfortable accommodation and a useful way to avoid the mud!
The desire to holiday in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way is also a big factor in its success.
After all caravanning is known as a ‘green tourism option and the carbon footprint of a typical holiday is much reduced without air travel.
The Caravan Club takes pride in sensitively developing and landscaping its sites to protect and enhance the natural environment and its inhabitants.
