Get hooked on fishing

Here Sally Gallop from the Environment Agency says: ‘Go fishing! Give it a go – I did and I loved it!’

Although I had worked for the Fisheries department since 1988, I had never been fishing until 2004.

That year I was asked to organise some free fishing events. I went along to help with the children’s event, ended up untangling lines, baiting hooks and to my utmost surprise I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was to coin a phrase ‘Hooked’. The look of pure excitement and joy on a child’s face when they catch their first fish is not one to miss.

I knew from that day that this new aspect of my job within the Environment Agency was going to be one that gave me great pleasure.

Since then I have organised events every year and in 2011 we will, once again, have free fishing events to introduce people to the sport of angling.

Events suitable for your younger children will be held when the weather warms (hopefully) up in June.

Book a place in advance. Call 01208 265012 for booking forms, or download one from our website www.environment-agency.gov.uk

All events are free and there is no need to buy a rod licence.

More events later in the year!

From Treemeadow Fishery, near Hayle to Siblyback Lake, near Liskeard, we aim to give as many people as we can the chance to try fishing for the first time.

Dates for the whole year are to be confirmed later, but in the meantime check out the April events below (for children 12 and over).

Easter Holidays – A time for egg hunts and chocolate eggs for the little ones! But for the over-12s the Environment Agency has organised a series of fishing events in Cornwall for beginners to try their hand.

Budding anglers can book a place at an event where coaches will be on hand. All equipment will be provided. And should they catch a trout then they can take it home for tea.

Wreck and Shark Fishing Trips FOR ALL YOUR TACKLE AND BAIT REQUIREMENTS

Cornish Visitor Guide - spring / summer 2011 47

So why not try fishing? It’s a hobby that’s good for you and your family, and you’ll soon realise why it’s the most popular outdoor sport in the country.

You do not require a rod licence for any of the events organised by the agency, although a licence is normally required if you are over 12 years old, and you are fishing for freshwater fish (salmon, trout, and coarse fish).

A full year’s adult trout and coarse licence costs £27, but you can also buy a single day’s licence for only £3.75. Under 16s get a full year for only £5.

You can buy a rod licence by following the link from our website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ homeandleisure/recreation/ fishing/ or from any Post Office.

Our telephone sales line is 0844 800 5386.

Phone lines are open 8.30am-8pm daily from March to September, and 8.30am-6pm daily from October to February.

Not only is a rod licence a legal requirement, but we use the money to protect and improve fishing in England and Wales.
