Bodmin Jail - a memorable day out for all
Built in 1779, Bodmin Jail was the County Prison of Cornwall offering a maximum of 219 cells until its closure in 1927. Within the formidable walls of this once austere site now lies an oasis dedicated to re- telling history, leisure and tourism.
The Jail saw the last execution in Cornwall in 1909, on the morning of July 20th at 07.59 when William Hampton was hung for the murder of his girlfriend Emily.
Purchased by its current owners in 2004, Bodmin Jail has undergone a substantial programme of building and renovation works; now offering licensed bars,
restaurants, a covered courtyard and visitor experience.
Bodmin Jail is an ideal location for a good family day out; see the only working execution pit in England, wonder in the ruins of the Naval Prison, explore the civil wing, or just enjoy one of our famous cream teas.
Study many of the historic artefacts that have been uncovered during recent restoration works,or watch a short film on execution by hanging - it’s up to you.
