A T
special gardener from the Westcountry has received an award from
TV presenter David Bellamy at a ceremony in London. Angie Macdonald received the award from David Bellamy and Susan Hampshire for the Sand Rose garden at Marazion at the recent Gardening Against The Odds Awards.
he national awards – organised by The Conservation
Foundation in association with The Sunday Telegraph and Green & Black’s – are dedicated to gardening writer Elspeth Thompson, who died last March. Entries came from gardeners throughout the country, all with stories to tell of how their lives and the lives of others had been changed for the better through gardening. Angie was given the highly commended gardeners award. Angie, when widowed at 30, set

up a place and special garden to give other bereaved families a beautiful place to begin coming to terms with their loss. Sand Rose does not offer a therapeutic or counselling programme – it simply gives families the key to a cottage where they will be staying and the garden works its
magic. They know they are in a place where their bereavement is acknowledged – the garden is key to helping people recover. As a direct result of Angie’s personal loss and insight she has offered a helping hand to hundreds of families, who are referred by bereavement services, GPs etc.

G
ardeners just love to find new plants and seeds, and where better than
while on holiday in a hot country where exotic trees, shrubs and plants are abundant. But there are strict regulations on what you can or can’t bring home from a trip abroad.
Seeds are not such a problem, because the internet has opened up a whole new avenue for those who are after unusual seeds and companies across the world sell by mail order. If, however, you do spot packets of seeds you must follow the rules as to the amount you can legally bring into the UK. EU countries are fine, you can bring in seeds, plants and plant material providing they are for your own use and not for a business or trade and as long as they have been grown in the EU. They must also be pest and disease
free. Those travelling from non-EU countries must be aware of restrictions on both plants and
seeds. These rules are, of course, to prevent the spread of diseases and pests. For a list of the European and Mediterranean countries with fewer restrictions on plants and seeds see the HM Customs and Excisewebsite:
