entillie Castle, star of Channel 4’s Country House Rescue, has
announced an exclusive opportunity to study one of the 18th Century’s most revered landscape designers, Humphry Repton, on May 12. The tutor for the day will be Keir Davidson, writer and landscape designer, who will provide a unique opportunity to discover the life and work of Repton, with particular focus on the commissions he undertook in the area in and around the Lower Tamar Valley, including Pentillie Castle, Port Eliot, Antony House and Catchfrench Manor. The day will consist of two lectures in the morning, which will provide a general overview of Repton’s career, as well as specific details of his work in the Tamar Valley,
followed by an exclusive guided tour in the afternoon of the gardens at Pentillie, Port Eliot and Catchfrench Manor, which are not normally open to the public. Pentillie managing director Sammie Coryton said: ‘It is still a well-kept secret that Pentillie’s grounds are Repton designed. And the story behind them is fascinating. We are really excited that Keir will be able to share something of Repton’s genius in the perfect surroundings of the area where his talents shone.’ Visitors will also have the chance to be one of the first to see a new discovery at the castle – the buildings’ original driveway, which has just been revealed. The study day package costs £85pp including entry to all the gardens, lunch, the lectures and refreshments.

Nurseries & Garden Centre has remained loyal to this historically niche area of the business, having just taken delivery of a shipment of exotic plants from Spain. Trevena Cross Nurseries, located in Breage, near Helston, has for a long time been serving customers with unusual exotic plant varieties that originate mainly from the southern hemisphere, including South Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand. The cold Cornish winters in recent years, however, have led to a diminished market for these wonderful rare species. Graham Jeffery, Trevena Cross Nurseries & Garden Centre owner, said: ‘People are understandably reluctant
to buy a plant for their garden that they think they could lose when a frost hits, but what they don’t realise is that certain species are able to withstand sub-zero conditions. Years of experience dealing with these magnificent plants has taught us which can withstand the cold temperatures, and so with careful selection we ensure it is only these hardiest varieties that are brought over for our customers to enjoy in their own garden.’ Trevena Cross Nurseries also caters for every other garden need. For more information about the diverse range of plants available at Trevena Cross Nurseries & Garden Centre, call 01736 763880, email
info@trevenacross.co.uk or visit the centre just off the A394 between Helston and Penzance.
