Spring 2011 Cornish Gardener 7

Reach for the skies M

embers of the Arboricultural Association in Cornwall

want to get up close with gardeners – and they will be doing just that at the Royal Cornwall Show in June. The county branch of the association has taken a stand in the flower show at Royal Cornwall because they reckon that’s the best way of reaching their target audience.

Tim Scott-Ellis, chairman of the association, says the contact with gardeners is a fruitful, two-way process.

Association members include contractors, local authority tree officers and consultants who can help with planning advice and issues such as tree risk management. ‘We are a branch of the national organisation and broadly, the aim is to promote the good management of trees,’ he said. The association provides information to the public on trees and their management. It runs two schemes for professionals that are designed to assure

customers of the high standards and skills of members. One is for contractors and one for consultants. They are national schemes which operators in Cornwall have yet to take up, but Tim hopes the show will change all that. ‘We are trying to promote the schemes in Cornwall and I hope the show will help us in that process,’ he said. ‘Also, we are keen to meet people and generate more interest in the services our members can offer. Being in the flower marquee means we will come into contact more with the people who have trees in their garden, rather than the commercial foresters. We can talk to them about pests and diseases which are currently causing problems and about general tree care and maintenance. There is also a lot for us to learn. Often I will turn up in someone’s garden and they will have an amazing collection of trees, some of which I don’t see every day. It is a fascinating learning process. It means we can increase our rather limited list of species that grow successfully

in Cornwall. There’s a lot of land that could do with planting up with trees and this sort of research is an aid to that process.’ Association secretary in Cornwall Mark Nankervis (right) said that consulting the experts did not necessarily mean an expensive course of work would be needed. ‘People generally are of the conception that a well-managed tree is one that has had a lot of work done to it. But usually it’s the case that the less you have done to a tree, the healthier it is.’

lower show chairman, Kenneth Willcock is pleased with the way things

are shaping up for the three-day event in June (9-11). The hard winter rang alarm bells because it could have affected the progress of some plants. But all indications are that growers have caught up and warmer spring weather will give them the boost they need. TREVARNO

Treasure trove T

revarno dates back to 1246 and is located in a valley around two miles from Helston. In 1874 it was purchased by the Bickford- Smiths, creators of the Miner’s Safety Fuse who developed the garden, much as is seen today. In 1994 the estate was was sold and after much work by the current owners – still ongoing – the garden opened in 1998 to the public for the first time. The wonderfully relaxing 35-acre

Victorian garden has a treasure trove of interesting features to enjoy, including an Italian garden, Serpentine Yew tunnel, lake and Victorian boathouse. Between April and mid May, the Beech Wood has a stunning carpet of English bluebells. A ‘must see’ is the amazing National Museum of Gardening. There are also two further museums – the Toy Collection and the Soap Museum. For more information visit www.trevarno.co.uk
