SHS Receives National Student Council Award

submitted by the National Association of Student Councils For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, Salem High School (SHS) has been awarded a 2011 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils. More than 160 high school councils were named National Councils of Excellence, but Salem High School is one of only 144 high school councils nationwide to receive the highly esteemed honor of being named a National Gold Council of Excellence. To meet the requirement for the National Council of Excellence Award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of criteria. Those councils named to the Gold Level have successfully met a greater number of the criterion. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC, schools that qualify for the award demonstrate such things as leadership training for council members, teacher/staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning, and active participation in their state and national student council organizations. “Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award indicates a dedication on the part of the local school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” says

Jeff Sherril, associate director of NASC. “NASC applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities.” Principal Maura Palmer commented that “the Salem High School community already recognizes the value of our hard-working Student Council. To have the NASC acknowledge them through this award is an even greater validation of that hard work. It is quite an honor for which the students should be proud.”

Student Council President Fatima Adigun, a SHS senior, said, “Our school is very lucky to have a group of students that are so dedicated and willing to work to improve student life, appreciate teachers, and serve the community. While doing so, these students learn a great deal about leadership and team work that improves their chances of success in the future.” The National Association of Student Councils

(NASC) promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities. NASC is a program of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The NASSP also sponsors the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), which recognizes outstanding middle-level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, and character. Decks for Soldiers – Extreme Makeover Style by Doug Robinson

Lenzi Construction and Remodeling, Hudson, along with Professional Building Services, Salem, have partnered with the North American Deck and Railing Association’s (NADRA) Deck for a Soldier program to provide and build a dream deck for veterans, free of charge. Founded in 2007, Deck for a Soldier brings together suppliers, contractors, dealers, and distributors around the country in an effort to design and construct the ultimate dream deck for our vets.

“It’s a small way our industry

can give back to those that give us so much—our freedom!” states NADRA. “NADRA launched its Deck for a Soldier program in 2007 when an inquiry came across the NADRA Website. Sergeant Thomas placed an inquiry to NADRA member, Sawdust, Ltd. of Broken Arrow, OK, through www.NADRA.org, in anticipation of scheduling a deck build when she returned home. Here, the idea of building a ‘Deck for a Soldier’ was born. This is a community effort that expresses our appreciation for the service and dedication of the men and women of our armed forces.” Working with manufacturers such as Fiberon,

“We are able to reach out to our soldiers and their families and create for them their dream deck. Fiberon is one of the industry leaders when it comes to composite and PVC decking and railing. Fiberon is aggressively involved in NADRA and proudly supports programs like Deck for a Soldier.”

“In addition, Fiberon believes in making
