More Letters to our Editor continued from page 3

The New Hampshire House of Representatives is essentially comprised of volunteers who care about the state and want to serve their neighbors and make society a better place. Any notion that we neglected the most vulnerable in society is simply without basis. Ultimately we will all be judged by God and I’m sure there are areas where you have made our church stronger, but from my perspective it will be a much needed new chapter for New Hampshire Catholics when your retirement is accepted and we can bring new leadership to the church that is untainted by the past abuses. For many, this will be a much-needed step toward healing. However, as I feel it is critical for you, as a leader of our Church to consider your role and history when speaking out on issues of the day, I bear the same responsibility for how I represent myself, the House of Representatives, the state, and my faith. In this regard, I have fallen short of my own standards in my public comments. While I still feel considerable anger and hurt about the abuse scandal, you and certainly the public deserve better from me than colorful comments that are lacking in forethought. Rest assured that I appreciate the flaws of my statement and I

know that you are aware that we are all human and for those who are believers, sinners. You have my word that I will use this moment as an opportunity for personal growth and will thoughtfully consider the criticism I have received.

Rep. D.J. Bettencourt - Salem For One Team,

Relay For Life is All About Family

The Relay for Life of Salem, NH, brings together all kinds of people – families, coworkers, friends, sports teams, and others – to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society. For the team “Angie’s Family Ties,” it’s all about the relationship between team members and their loved ones who have battled cancer. Angie Lister first became involved in Relay for Life 15 years ago. She and her close friend Tommy found out that their co-worker Cindy had been diagnosed with cancer. To show their support, Tommy and Angie joined Cindy’s Relay For Life team. It was then that Angie and Tommy found out that both of them had mothers who were affected by the disease. Tommy’s mother was a cancer survivor, and Angie had lost her mother to breast cancer when she was just nine years old. This brought the two of them even closer together as friends, and started the strength and support behind “Angie’s Family Ties.” “Year after year we believed the Relay For Life was a chance for us to honor the ones we love and way for us to fight back,” said Angie. Over five years ago, Angie’s original teammate Tommy was diagnosed with cancer. With his diagnosis came a promise to continue the team, even if something should happen to Tommy. “It was the hardest promise I’ve ever had to make,” Angie explained. When Tommy passed away in 2008, Angie continued her fight against cancer with the support of her family and friends. Angie’s team has grown so much that they’ve branched off into

several teams. As the team continued to grow, so did the honor board that Angie created, filled with names and photos of loved ones who have battled cancer. The honor board is on display at Angie’s campsite every year, reminding everyone why they are there. “You will never regret getting involved; it’s a truly moving experience to walk for all those who we love and honor the ones we have lost,” Angie said. The team’s motto has always been “Family means never getting left behind or forgotten,” and Angie and her team have certainly lived up to that message. Cassie Viau, Salem, NH Relay for Life - Salem Fundraising Thank-You

The Gilman E. Sleeper Camp #60 of the Sons of the Union

Veterans of the Civil War and Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank the people of Salem for the overwhelming generosity displayed by the community during our recent fundraising campaign. Thanks to their kindness, our organization will be able to conduct four memorial services, provide JROTC awards to deserving youngsters, and perhaps most importantly, facilitate the restoration of Civil War veteran gravesites, not only in Salem, but in several surrounding communities as well. As we begin commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil

War in early April, it is indeed heartening to learn that the sacrifices of the 35,000 Granite Staters who fought to preserve the Union are still foremost in the hearts of Salem’s citizens.

elementary school. I would like to extend a special thank-you to Mr. Steve Blaise, the general manager at the Olive Garden, and the many waitstaff members that accompanied Mr. Blaise to our school. In addition to fully donating all the food and cooking in our kitchen to provide a hot, delicious meal, your staff also served and took care of all 150 guests. Even those that showed up late were graciously greeted and given a hot dish of pasta without question. Our night included wonderful food, light sounds of a classical guitarist, Gerald Johnston, fifth-grade servers adorned with Italian-themed aprons, painted mustaches, and chef hats, as well as a beautifully decorated school cafeteria with Italian colored balloons and flowers. Before leaving for the evening, the Olive Garden repeatedly asked if there was anything more that could be done, which was over and above any expectation imaginable. Many of our guests raved about the food, service, and how much they enjoyed their evening. You are truly a great group of people. Thank you so very much to the Olive Garden for making our Family Fun Night at the Soule School memorable!

Christine Cochran, Soule School PTA President - Salem Appreciation for Salem Police

On March 28, I received a number of harassing calls. Both on my house and cell phones. I called the Salem Police non-emergency number. The lady that answered was very polite and understanding. She took my info and told me she would send an officer. Within minutes, Officer Smith responded. He was extremely polite. He listened to the calls. Then, he instructed me on what to do. I believe he and all police officers are a credit to Salem. It’s easy to knock people. But I believe in the old saying “walk a mile in my shoes.”

When responding to a call, officers do not know what they are going to face.
