Grey Coat 6 News from the art department

What kind of artist are you? This term, Year 12 students were asked to think about their identity as an artist. Students had to write down one word that described another student’s work and attach them onto the back of that student. In the end the students had a word to describe their own work from each member of the class but they weren’t allowed to read them until the end of the exercise.

It was really interesting to see how certain themes were mentioned again and again. This helped the students to understand how their work is perceived by others and also hopefully helped them work out just ‘what kind of artist’ they are.

Students followed this up by writing an artist statement, a difficult thing to put into words! It was a great lesson – we wish Yr 12 students good luck in their upcoming Art exam on the 24th March.

Creative Mentors Foundation For the past two years the Art Department have worked with the Creative Mentors Foundation. They train arts graduates in dyslexia awareness and specialist teaching strategies, preparing them to work in schools alongside the existing staff who are engaged in arts teaching. See their website to find out information about this registered charity:

This year we have a new artist working with us, Stuart McCaffer. He is a sculptor and also a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art. He will work with a group of Yr 7 & 8 students to

create a large inflatable sculpture, soon to be revealed at lower school! We will be exhibiting this later on this month and parents are invited. Details to follow. Gillian Lyons
