Grey Coat Issue 11: March/April 2011

World Book Day

This year the English Department and the Library have collaborated to celebrate World Book Day with the launch of our Book Passport - designed to challenge students (and staff) to expand their reading choices into new genres.

staff with a written or spoken review of a title receive a ‘visa’ stamp to show that they have visited the genre. Students who gain 10 stamps in at least 5 different genres will win a book from the English Department.

The project is the theme of the Library’s new corridor display – we had a lot of fun taking the photographs! There has been a lot of interest so far, and the girls can be seen scanning the shelves - passport in hand -to find their next port of call, or talking excitedly about the titles they have read (and, yes, we CAN tell the difference if you have only seen the film!)

The passport contains lists of 10 recommended books in 18 different genres, and readers who can present the library

The library staff is taking up the challenge as well – I have read more than half, but aim to finish all 180 by the end of the Summer term.

Ms Swan and Ms Thane have fun illustrating detective novels for the World Book Day Display in St Andrew's library corridor

Senior netball round up

Year 9 vs St Marylebone We got off to a slow start, taking our time to settle together as a team on the court giving our opposition a chance to finish the first quarter with a 6 goal lead. The second quarter began to look much stronger, with everyone making definite leads we started to close the gap, but were still behind by 4 goals at the half time break.

The second half was even more exciting, with Grey Coat making a comeback to level the scores at the third quarter break. It was down to the wire for the last quarter with a great contest between both sides. On the final whistle it was purely down to who had the previous centre pass, and unfortunately it was St Marylebone who

came out the victors in a tightly fought 12 – 11 final score. Well done to the girls who played, especially to Harriet Wright who played an outstanding game out of position in GD instead of her usual spot in C. Player or the Match: Harriet Wright.

Year 9 vs St Augustine’s This match was a real challenge for me and the team. We wanted a really good start as we had lost the previous match against St Marylebone which we obviously regretted. When the match started we all got into the game and everyone was playing their best and trying not to break the footwork rule! (Miss Clohesy gave us press-ups for each time we did!) In the end we won the match

15-1. I enjoyed the match and it was a wonderful experience. Jemimah Kabuye 9G

Year 10 vs St Marylebone We started off strong and continued the relentless pressure for the entire duration of the match. Everyone made strong leads into space, our passing was accurate and we chased every loose ball down.

After the half time break, we were leading by 5 goals. With some excellent defensive play from Ann-Marie in GK and fantastic shooting skills from both Iashia and Dionne, we were able to finish off the game with animpressive win of 21 – 4. Well done year 10s! Player of the Match: Iashia Carth

If you would like to join in, you can find the book lists on the website and the VLE. Happy reading!

Year 7 have an extra treat, as we have been invited to take them to St James Library for story-telling activities, and a free book! Mrs P Swan, Librarian
