wire Hotels came to prominence by creating two award winning hotels in Beijing and Hong Kong. Readers may remember we


featured one of them, The Upper House, when it opened in Hong Kong in 2009. This high rise hotel benefited from stunning views across the bay and an equally striking interior design. Last year they opened EAST, a 345 room modern lifestyle hotel, also in Hong Kong, and launched a new hotel brand, called Chapter Hotels, in the UK. The aim is to develop a number of highly individual British hotels within buildings of architectural interest. The first, the Montpellier Chapter, has now


opened in the central Montpellier district of Cheltenham, a stone’s throw from the Cheltenham Ladies College. Of more relevance is the hotel’s close proximity to the Hotel du Vin; a hotel that is not too dissimilar in style and design and one which is bound to have drawn comparisons from locals and regular visitors. And well it might: both hotels aim to attract discerning guests and strive to provide a relaxed and slightly sophisticated level of service without being too formal or pricey. The Montpellier Chapter was already in use as


a hotel, the Kandinski, when Swire purchased it. It was in need of some restoration and the interiors required re-planning and expanding to meet the new hotel’s needs. Make Architects were duly
