Toyota says some U.S. shutdowns ‘inevitable’
NEW YORK, April 4, 2011 (AFP) -
Toyota said Monday that stopping some production in its US car plants was inevi- table after Japan’s earthquake and tsunami crippled the supply of parts. Mike Goss, a spokesman Toyota US, said some shutdowns were “inevitable” but would not necessarily affect all plants. “This is a very fluid situation,” he told
AFP. “Some interruptions (are) likely but where and when (is) unknown,” he said.■
Toyota wins fi rst U.S. accelerators verdict
NEW YORK, April 1, 2011 (AFP) – Japanese automaker Toyota won its first U.S. jury verdict Friday over accusations that its accelerator pedals are subject to dangerous jamming.
The court in Central Islip on Long Is- land, New York was the first in the country to render a decision in the controversy that has forced Toyota into recalling more than 12 million vehicles worldwide for adjust- ments since 2009.
Amir Sitafalwalla sued Toyota, saying design problems in his Scion’s floor mat or possibly the electronic throttle had caused him to surge into a tree. Toyota welcomed the jury’s decision. “We believe that this case sets an impor- tant benchmark for unintended acceleration litigation against Toyota across this coun- try, as it clearly demonstrates a plaintiff’s inability to identify, let alone prove the existence of, an alleged electronic defect,” the company said in a statement.■
