Muth Family Learning Center Good Communication and Its Importance In School
Students can believe that teachers and parents don’t always listen to them and understand their needs. Teachers and parents can believe that their students don’t always hear them and heed their direction. The success of parent and teacher meetings can rise or drop on the level of communication achieved.
In checking with Roget’s Thesaurus of Synonyms and Antonyms, communication has two important elements: joining and meaning. To join is to be with (not above or below) something or someone. This is a conscious choice. Meaning is a valued thought which implies understanding.
When communication happens it is a positive thing. It has equality even if there is disagreement. Communication is not ordering, threatening, bullying, or blaming. If we all want to communicate better with each other, we need to join with our listeners on a level that demonstrates value of self and message. We also need to be present, honest, and open with each other on appropriate levels. The power for each of us is to join with and engage in sharing our thoughts and ideas with respect.
In the book, How to Succeed in High School by Barbara Mayer, the following quotes are important to consider: “In order for real communication to take place, both people must be able to relax and meet on common ground. Playing games with people and being afraid to be honest with them is a form of insincerity” and the key is, “concern and respect for each other’s opinions.” Therefore, communication, naturally good in essence, allows people, no matter age or station, to hear and be heard. In school, communication is listening and learning.
