Milestones in Stockton’s History


1969


Legislation to establish a state college in South Jersey was officially approved.


Dr. Richard E. Bjork was named Stockton’s first president.


1971


Classes for Richard Stockton State College began in September at Atlantic City’s Mayflower hotel while work continued at the school’s official Pomona campus.


1972


September marked the start of the first full academic year of classes at Stockton’s Pomona campus.


1975


Stockton’s first four-year class graduated on June 8, with 475 students receiving degrees.


1976


Stockton’s Performing Arts Center, which has since brought many world renowned troupes to South Jersey, first opened its 550-seat theatre.


1979


Peter M. Mitchell became Stockton’s second president.


Vera King Farris became Stockton’s third president.


1983 1993


The college’s name was officially changed to The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.


1996


The Arts and Sciences building, costing $9.6 million, opened.


1999


Stockton’s first graduate degrees are awarded for the Masters of Business Studies program.


2001


Stephen Dunn, now Professor Emeritus, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his work “Different Hours”.


Men’s soccer won the college’s first NCAA team championship.


2002


Jeff Haines, men’s soccer coach, won the NCAA Coach of the Year for Division III title.


2003


Dr. Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr. became Stockton’s fourth president.
