The MPA stand was very busy indeed, with over 40 new members signed up and many Licentiate panels passing scru- tiny pending the completion of Diploma submissions. Every day featured a constant roster of speakers giving 30 to 40 minute talks, rounded off with an hour’s live studio demo and hands-on from Hasselblad UK with their latest H4D series cameras and Profoto lighting.

The standard featured the full Awards 2010 exhibition – over 400 images presented on the rear wall, printed along with all the other display photogra- phy by Loxley Colour.

One tower at the corner of the stand had four two-metre high, one metre wide prints on show. These were also from the Awards merits, and proved that often relatively small digital images can make giant exhibi- tion prints which look great. The pictures were by Matt Pereira (huge kitten with huge eyes!), Ingrid van Heteren (see our cover this issue), Lisa Visser and Stephen Loh. All featured eyes to look out at visitors to the stand.

The UK and Overseas Master Photographers of the Year had equally large prints on display, and the quality of the entries for the consumer awards (bridal magazines, Cherubs, and so on) could be seen as well as the Mario Acerboni Three From One Wedding Awards in full.

he organisers of FOCUS are delighted to report that last year’s record attendance has been matched in 2011. In fact exceeded – with total audited individual attendees of 37,594 over four days – “once again, no sign of contraction as a result of the current economic situation, which reflects the importance of the UK photo- graphic industry’s annual show”.

On the stand, Darron Hartas met Cherubs partners and newcomers interested in the baby photography leads, Chris Buck acted as stand manager for product sales, with HQ staff helping. Colin and Linda Buck, together with many National Executive Committee and regional members, were busy from the opening of the show to the last minute with member enquiries. The Licentiate judging panel met daily from Sunday to Tuesday, and any visitor to the stand was sure to able to speak to a Fellow or a judging panel member despite pressure on everyone’s time.

The new clean look of the redesigned MPA logo was seen for the first time (other than in the last issue of this magazine) and seems to have been well received. It had more impact, with a clean and modern feel, as the photographs of the stand show.

The MPA/Fujifilm Wedding

and Portrait Awards 2011 were launched, with entry forms available from the stand to help ensure a good first round (clos- ing date May 3rd).

Though the opening Sunday (‘amateur day’) appeared to be quiet, the traditionally most busy professional weekdays were crowded. The MPA stand did not have another stand next to it so circulation and access was easy from all sides.
