rofessional photographers owe much to Japan, and throughout the world thousands of Japanese company staff, with friends and families back home, have been in our thoughts as events unfolded after the earthquake and tsunami of March 11th. Carl Zeiss Japan re-opened their Sendai sales office on April 1st, after assigning an increasing number of staff to a special disaster relief support team. With offices in Tokyo and Osaka and their main lens factory in Tokyo, most effects on the company have been from blackouts, logistics and export disruption. Nikon Corporation, initially donating 100 million yen on March 14th, announced that one thousand compact digital cameras and SD memory cards would be given to organisations working on earth- quake relief; Nikon Vision Co. Ltd had donated 200 pairs of binocu- lars. Nikon plant making the FX D3 and D700 full frame professional DSLR ranges had to cease operation, and was expected to resume during this month. One loss of life is reported only, at Sendai. Casio, initially donating 10 million yen, increased this to 50 mil- lion on March 18th. Canon reacted quickly to donate 300 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross and other organisations. It has many facilities in northern Honshu, the region affected by the disaster, including L-series lens manufacturing. It is not known when production will resume. 15 employees were injured, and their Optics R&D centre was badly hit. Sony Corporation has many facilities in the region, but none of these appear to be directly involved in the Cybershot, Handycam or Alpha ranges. They donated 300 million yen to relief immediately af- ter the incidents, and have continued to raise funds throughout the world. In Weybridge, Sony UK and Sony Europe have been matching £1 for £1 all donations made or raised by their staff. Camera and lens production has been halted because of disruption to the supply chain for the components needed, even though the factories are close to Tokyo and not directly affected. and Panasonic’s factory making Lumix cameras, are both close to Fukushima and have been closed down until further notice. Fujifilm and Fujifilm Xerox have donated 300 million yen in money, and 470 million yen in vital supplies including diagnostic ultrasound systems and anti-viral dust masks. Panasonic has donated 300 million yen, ten thousand radios and flashlights, and half a million dry batteries. Sanyo has provided 4000 solar LED lanterns. Sigma’s operations are a little further away at Aizu, Bandai (60 miles from the Daiichi reactors), but they have also been forced to suspend some operations partly due to the effect of the quake and tsunami on their many component suppliers in the region. One Epson plant was directly hit by the tsunami, and three others in the region have been closed. Two Epson plants are only ten miles from the Fukushima reactors – within the evacuation zone, and not expected to reopen until the area is declared safe. Noritsu has donated 10 million yen. Walmart Stores Inc, USA, have committed $5m in cash and kind and organised fundraising drives worldwide. Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester NY, has donated $100,000 to the International Red Cross. Konica Minolta has donated 50 million yen, Kyocera Group 100
million. Ricoh, with its plants well away from the affected region but still closed, has given 300 million yen. Olympus has donated 100 million yen.
These are just some of the responses from the industry, no doubt omitting many more. To donate to the Red Cross relief effort, visit:
