master regions shoot for East Midlands Region
photography Louise Sumner’s time travel model
LOUISE SUMNER visited the East Midlands Region in March and provided a wonderful cre- ative and inspirational day. She gave us a fascinating insight into her working practices and her desire to produce fresh and exciting work.
The day began with a pre- sentation about how she got started in photography, how she has built up her business and how she differentiates herself within the market. She followed the presentation with slide- shows displaying her fabulous wedding and fashion work. The workshop consisted of lighting demonstrations includ- ing natural, video and location flash lighting with a fifties and sixties theme. On our hunt for a suitable location we came across a wonderful vintage bus depot which was formerly the depot for Barton’s buses. We provided an agency model, a

professional makeup artist and hair stylist and genuine vintage clothing and accessories to give the shoot an authentic vintage fashion look. Louise explained her approach to fashion shoots, detailing how she develops the idea for each shoot from the initial concept into an editorial style storyboard.
The practical demonstra- tion began outside making use of the natural diffused light in the shade of the depot build- ing. Louise discussed the use of different lenses and shooting from different angles to achieve visually stimulating images. She guided the model with expert skill and provided useful tips on posing.
She demonstrated the use of natural light streaming through the skylight into the depot and discussed the importance of reflectors. Then she showed us how video lighting could be
used to enhance the subdued natural light on a bus to create a subtle, soft glamorous light- ing style befitting the vintage theme. Towards the end of the workshop she demonstrated the use of reflectors in late after- noon sunlight outside the depot. Finally she returned inside and demonstrated studio flash and reflector techniques to provide soft natural lighting.
Everyone who attended the day commented that they felt encouraged and inspired by Louise and thoroughly enjoyed her practical approach to train-
ing, notably her willingness to share her knowledge and her enthusiastic, creative approach photography. Testimonial from Lucy of Double Image Photography – “It was great to see how someone else works. The venue, model and styling were great and I en- joyed being able to take photos myself of Louise’s set ups. “It was an informative and enjoyable day and I have defi- nitely taken ideas and inspira- tion away to use in my own work.”
