Choosing your Fujfilm laboratory or printing process
Fujifilm materials cover a much wider spectrum than you might imagine. In the 10 x 8 print maximum needed for the Awards, you have a choice of many types of photographic paper from Fujifilm laboratories including Pearl which contains microscopic mica in the coating to give it a distinctive look and feel, and Crystal Archive Supergloss which has the slickest finish possible in an unmounted print. To find Fujifilm professional photo labs, just visit
http://www.fujifilmprolabs.co.uk/ which has a lab search – enter your postcode and find your choices.
Many of our regular advertisers are also Fujifilm labs, some display the logo, and print prices can be lower than you expect (your entry fee will probably cost more than your print, but never forget why win- ners are winners – some use hand printing and all winners use the highest quality output they can find). You can also enter prints made on the Fujix systems which many studios still use, Fuji’s instant pho- tography materials (scanned and reprinted), prints made on the Fujifilm ASK thermal transfer dye subli- mation event prints, prints made using the Fujifilm Green Box turnkey inkjet print production systems for studios, and prints made using any inkjet printer on Fujifilm Ink Jet papers. Not to forget… Fujifilm still makes film and it’s undergoing a renaissance right now.

Correct… or incorrect?
DIGITAL printing direct from files has reduced the need for colour labs to check your output prints – or even see the file. Most will run a routine visual check over all output to make sure things like pornography or apparent copyright infringement are spotted. More expensive labs will check the files before ever making a print. “Unless the photographer specifi- cally requests no correction, we default to colour, density and contrast correction”, One Vision director Derek Poulston told us. “Our prices are in the upper sector for digital output, but we believe the added value we offer our customers makes them worth the difference.” However, if you are an expert
Photoshop user with full colour management and able to obtain custom profiles for your chosen lab, even the lowest cost output can be very high quality today. You just have to submit with the right embedded profile after correcting the image yourself on a tested, calibrated system.
New Fuji Dry Lab Date:
FUJIFILM has launched the DL600, the latest addition to its range of dry inkjet minilabs. The DL600 is equipped with an exclusive ink head developed to handle five inks with the same ink consumption per unit area as the four-coloured inks of the existing DL series.
