hearts & minds

MPA President Henk van Kooten goes all conceptual for his tour of the UK regions. He’s going to push members to forge more distinctive creative identities – and to create original award-winning images which also earn high returns.

Spring into Summer with some real inspiration from one of Europe’s most imaginative and successful social photographers – Henk van Kooten FMPA, dur- ing his year as President of the Association, has agreed to visit all the regions (some jointly) to present his seminar ‘Photo- graphic Concepts – Where the Heart meets the Mind’. The dates will take place between May 22nd and June 2nd 2011. Each event opens at 10.00am, after registration, with ‘Who is Henk van Kooten?’ – about Henk and ‘how he got crazy’.

For his introductory AV show Henk has used a re-mix dance/ trance sound-track by Ben Liebrand.

He follows this up with ‘The

I & The We’ – the concept of your profile as a professional photographer, the artists and the business, and a further picture show.

After a break for refresh- ments, and another audiovisual, Henk will show individual im- ages and explain Photographic Concepts – why, how and who about lighting, posing, commu- nicating, marketing and sales. After this Photographic Con- cepts Part 2 will cover concepts and projects in the same way

before the seminar breaks for an hour’s lunch.

At 1.30pm, Henk resumes with ‘Competitions – why, how and who’. He’s not only been MPA President 2011, he has been the chair of the judges for the MPA Awards and can pass on many insights. “I want that there to be a phenomenal amount of entries for this year’s competition”, he says. “I want it to be the best ever!” Together with Vincent O'Byrne, Henk has written a book about judging photographs and how judges see images, including the differences all round the world. It also covers creating an award winning im- age, and he’ll talk about aspects of the book.

This will be followed be a Print Critique, “the constructive way of giving feedback and a must for entering competitions”. After a break and AV show,

comes Photographic Concepts Part 3 and a closing show. It’s not a totally rigid programme and Henk will be respond- ing to the audience. Delegates will be given more information after booking and we’ll have an update in the May magazine edition. Turn the page for an overview of Henk’s work and the tour dates and locations.
