That’s right, besides a couple of bucks for gas and a quarter or two for a parking meter, these fun down the shore activities won’t cost you anything! Hit the Beach. Okay, not all area beach- es are free, but many are! Beaches in Atlantic City and the Wildwoods are free, free, free! So grab your beach chair and soak up a beautiful summer day at the beach. Get to the Point! Along the bay side, all the way from Cumberland County down to Cape May County, you can check out bald eagles, herons, and egrets. Some of South Jersey’s best birding occurs right in the heart of Cape May Point. Don’t for- get your binoculars. And while you’re there, check out the SS Atlantus, otherwise known as the concrete ship, before it disap- pears forever. And don’t forget to look for Cape May Diamonds, those pieces of quartz, thousands of years old that can be polished and faceted just like real dia-

Better yet, take in a real show and watch the fireworks on the Wildwood Boardwalk on Friday nights during the summer. They’re free of course! Bike or Hike. Street vendors stretch for blocks every July in Lower Township when the Cape May Beach Property Owners host a Whale of a Day, which celebrates the area’s whaling heritage. Enjoy the music and fun – it’s free! You need to be there, rain or shine, Saturday, July 9th. Love a Parade. North Wildwood has been called “The Parade Capital of New Jersey” – and for good reason. If there’s a reason to celebrate, chances are there’s a parade in town – St. Patrick’s Day, Mum- mers string bands and fancy brigades, New Jersey Firefighters, a Christmas in July Boat Parade and even another Irish parade – in September. Get out your eye patch. If it’s the pirate’s life for you, then grab your eye patch and shovel and start digging for Cap- tain Kidd’s treasure on the beach in Cape May. The elusive pirate returns each August – as he has for nearly 50 years – to recruit young pirates to help him find the bounty he reportedly left behind hundreds of years ago. The digging is free; any trea- sure you find is yours! Mark your calendar. Third Fridays – that’s the third Friday of each and every month – is THE happening place in the Glasstown Arts District along High Street in Millville. Enjoy the informal receptions in various shops and galleries while you chat with artisans. Window shop, listen to music, stroll along the riverwalk or sit a spell at the Captain Buck Riverfront Park.
