SEASHORE CHIC Take a bit of the beach home
area for inspiration... painting landmarks in Cape May along historic streets, pho- tographing sunsets framed by lighthouses or just adding their own take on the local sights. Check out craft shows, local bou- tiques and galleries for selections of art- work that will complement your decor, color schemes and personal tastes. Bring more of the outside in with a pot-
ted palm or a few smaller plants...of course, we prefer real to silk... to add that fresh, green touch to any room and remind you that summer is just around the corner. Fill a couple of big clear vases or cylinders with seashells for the mantel or on either side of the fireplace and you’ll have the best of both worlds – memories of a summer after- noon while curled up in front of a blazing fire with a good book on a chilly evening. Almost everyone has some sort of home

HINK ABOUT WHAT YOU love the most about the shore life style... the powder blue skies, the
lemony sunshine or the champagne-col- ored sand. Develop a color palette using those colors perhaps it's time to paint a room or two in shades of blues, yellows and greens that will add a touch of sum- mer to your home no matter the season or the temperature. Not quite ready to start a total redo?
Maybe your bedroom could use a fresh update using new linens with a seashore motif... talk about sweet dreams! Bathrooms are an easy
job...and not all that expensive. A few fluffy towels edged with seashells, a matching shower curtain with accessories and you will definitely hear the waves lap- ping the shoreline every morning – even if you can’t shower outside. Or, how about adding beach towels in a color scheme that complements your existing decor – they’re colorful and huge, two things everyone loves! Part of the seashore lifestyle is an open,
airy feeling... curtains moving ever so gen- tly when those afternoon shore breezes kick in. White is always a great choice and something sheer is even better…let the sun shine in and even those chilly winter after- noons feel a bit brighter. The unadorned window look is also popular right now...

maybe just a valance and that’s it. Think about slipcovers for living room
furniture in an easy-care (translation: wash- able) beachy fabric. Add some pillows with a nautical theme, an area rug and the room definitely has a shore look to it. Update wicker furniture in the sunroom
or on the deck with new cushions, invest in a glass-topped table or two, add some seashore napkins, some fun summer stemware and napkins... a guarantee your guests won’t want to leave. Artists and photographers flock to this
office...whether they telecommute or have their computer, printer and other equip- ment tucked into an out-of-the-way corner. A wine glass filled with sea glass adds a great touch to a desk without taking up too much precious space, or a few shells in a pretty dish will remind you that life is always a bal- ance of work and play. Don’t forget a calen- dar with great local scenes so you can count the days until its vacation time. None of these ideas appeal? No prob-
lem. Frame your vacation photos and dis- play them on shelves, the coffee table, bookcases and every nook and cranny throughout the house. They’re a great con- versation starter – and who doesn’t like to talk about their shore vacation? ■
